auto renews for 2 years? that is insane.

2 years? Unacceptable business practice when you paid your original contract obligations.

You no doubt have a legit gripe and they need to set you free. I would demand the contract.

Thanks for at least offering some support! As opposed to everyone else in here, who apparently love it when big national companies like ADT rip off their customers...

Yeah, I have Vivint. My dumbass signed the contract, so I can’t complain. Most alarm companies are shady as hell with their practices. Vivint is a 5 year contract and it auto renews if you don’t terminate the contract within the 30 days of renewal. I believe the termination letter also has to be mailed in. Can’t do it online.

None of this is happening in this thread.

The solution is pretty straightforward. Finish out your contract with them THEN switch. Hell when you them you're switching, when your contract is up they will renew you at half the price.

That may be an option. But I have a strong suspicion that when I request that service be transferred to my new house, they'll want to charge me a new installation fee -- even though the house is already equipped with a system, which was previously serviced by APS (a local company).

FWIW, APS tells me that any company is able to use the old equipment. Let's see if ADT agrees to it (I bet not, not without a hefty fee). The local company also tells me that when one of their customers moves, they relieve them from the contract. Should have gone local!

I had this problem with a business I sold. The buyer wanted another company but when I tried to cancel with ADT, they gave me the same shite. I had to write it into the purchase. I told the woman with ADT that not only would I never use them again for anything, I'd tell as many people as possible about just how terrible of an experience it was dealing with them.

They didn't seem to give a shite.

But yeah man. Fuuuuuuuuuuck ADT.

It’s your responsibility to know the terms of any contract you sign.

It surprises me that so many people in here are defending the alarm company -- these contracts are written to strong-arm and screw over consumers!
You signed the contract.

Stop being a twit. Who says you have to have an alarm system at all? I’ve never had an alarm system in my house.

Doesn’t answer your question, but I recommend alarmrelay.com. It’s legit. Pay once a year.

No contracts. Works as well as the locals. $8.95/month.

How can it get on your credit report if they don’t have your SS#? They are bluffing...

I bought a Ring alarm system and installed it myself. I then paid $100 for a year of monitoring.

We have SimpliSafe. Pretty similar I'd assume. It's like $8 per month for monitoring or somewhere around there.

Yeah I considered that one but we already had a Ring doorbell so I just stuck with them. I access everything through one app. Very convenient.

First mistake was signing a contract for alarm services which really don’t do much good. Second mistake nit to make are security cameras. Want an good alarm system?? Get a dog.

If you do this, make sure you read the new contract they will put in front of you. I did that some years ago, thinking the existing contract would just carryover from my old house under the same terms. Granted, I didn't read what they had me sign, but it was a new contract that resulted in adding 2 more years.

I was locked into a contract with Vivint (worst company ever) that they were claiming was for 24 months. However, I had a copy of the contract that said 14 months - the person that sold it to me told me it was only a year - which is something that they don’t even offer. I called customer service multiple times and made them aware of this but they wouldn’t stop billing me. I eventually had my lawyer contact their legal department and threaten to sue before they finally let me out of it.

Definitely anti-consumer tactics, especially in 2019 when no one uses postal mail, including the company that wants you to use paperless billing and online payments, etc. to save them money on postage and paper.

Yes. If you want to alarm your house buy the damn system.

Have a local alarm company install for a few hundred bucks and then they will monitor it for like 20 bucks a month w a 30 day out.

People pay out the nose for these ADT type companies to avoid a little extra up front cost. I will never understand
