But his actions are not "self preserving" following the separation, if true. In fact, he's done nothing but create suspicion.
If there was a separation, do you think his actions following are rational? I don't. And I think his parents have covered for him.
Sure there are several alternatives here, but the most obvious based on facts (including his actions) put something nefarious on the table.

Slow, can the van be considered a domicile at this point? I believe even the Utah sheriff deputy made a comment on it being their pseudo home on the road

He's completely lost touch with reality...he said something the other day about raising his niece in Alaska and was trying to convince the parents to let her stay there instead of returning home to Louisiana. Very weird

Suspicion, conjecture and theory is absolutely normal in this case. There's hardly any factual timeline evidence/accounts of whereabouts and behavior concomitant to what we all have burned into our head after the 1:17 video. I think we are all conditioned to extrapolate the worst case scenario first, which we're all doing. Me included.
