Kip has lost control of Turkey.

So is this a good thing or a bad thing?
This is a good thing. Turkey is a key ally of ours. The current President, Erdogan, has been enacting stricter laws more within the Islamist thinking. This goes very much against the democracy that is Turkey, and very much against the Turkish army. Unlike the USA, Turkey does not have courts to keep the President in check. The Turkish army does exactly this...they keep their President in check. Get out of line and you're gone. This will be the third time since WW2. This moron has also allowed his borders to remain porous which has allowed the movement of ISIS sympathizers. He absolutely needs to go.

This is bad for our Kurdish allies though

Looking like I made the right choice to cancel my vacation there next month

ALlies? The ones we have fricked over continually for the last 100 years? And this does have the potential to be bad for them but that depends if the coup succeeds and how hardline the ensuing regime will be. Will they be more concerned with the creeping Islamic presence or the Kurdish scapegoat?

We can't have everything. The continued free democracy of Turkey , as well as our military relationship with them, is much better for us as a nation. If every country in that area followed the same blueprint as Turkey there would be a lot less issues.

We are fixing to have an islamic state in NATO. All hail the Islamic Republic of Turkey.

The "kurds" are a lot more fractured than you would think, and that's just my experience in northern iraq.

My friend from turkey just said this: People are saying it was a set up so he could gain more power against military. And they didn't go to marmara where he was vacationing.

I'd be fine with a secular autocracy over Erdogan. I don't give a shite about "democracy" as some high ideal anymore. It doesn't work in that region and people need to get over it.
I agree from the standpoint of what's best for us, but I still believe that democracy (ideally) is best. I agree though, that this is becoming less and less likely in many parts of the world and that's fine. I'll take stability and secularism as an alternative.

Democracy is best, but there has been a lot of claims that Erdogan and his party have rigged the elections so who knows if it is really democracy.

It looks like the coup is failing. This might actually be the worst possible scenario.

Looks quite healthy in Ankara ... not so much in Istanbul ... hard to tell.

It's not over by any stretch of the imagination.

It's not. Erdogan's policies aren't democratic. at all. I was speaking in support of overthrowing that POS.
That said, as others posted, democracy isn't going to happen in a lot of places. In exchange, you want a secular, moderate autocracy.

The coup may initially fail, but it may cause a revolution amongst the people, which Erdogan may not be able overcome. Hopefully.

Any chance we get Constantinople back after all this?
