Someone else mentioned he was not only a diver, but specializes in cave rescues all over the globe.

Trained Cave and Rebreather diver Richard Harris

What is the maximum distance one has to dive in a single stretch? Hard to tell from the graphic if the diver would be under for a few 15 minute periods or if you’re looking at longer dives.

My guess is that the dives are almost certainly taking longer than 15 minutes apiece; from the graphics it seems like a majority of the trek involves diving, and it’s taking divers 5 hours each way. But based on the amounts being pumped out, I’m sure that number is going more and more down.
This is one of the best graphics I’ve seen of the route, I can’t remember if it has already been posted or not.

Also wonder if they have underwater communications: I’ve seen the full face communicators and they have a lot of exposed parts- not great for caving. Wonder if they even make them in kids size.

I was wondering the same thing. It would seem like a necessity.
When I heard the coach had been a Buddhist monk before bed last night my heart was put at ease . Compassion and giving and personal sacrifice is their path. If you don’t know, he has likely suffered tremendously with deprivation previously as a necessity of his Buddhist practice, understands what it is on a spiritual and psychological level and was likely to keep the kids calm and in the moment. I can’t wait to hear all the details of how they kept their cool.
Prayers for all involved.

That Dr. Richard Harris sounds like a Grade A badass.

That was difficult to read. I didn’t understand most of it.

Did ready correctly that this team wandered into this cave after a picnic?
Expect the coach to get caned.

People on scene were referring to him as Superman.

The way the world has responded to this situation gives me hope for humanity.

Couldn't they just knock the kids out, and then pull/carry them through? They'd use less oxygen, and they wouldn't be able to freak out

Thailand must not have many people. They wouldn’t even try to save these people in the us, think how many tax dollars this must cost

If they were sedated there would be no way to monitor if they were ok or not. Once they get past the main dive its probably much safer to have them ambulatory and awake.

Even reading about the exploits of these cave divers makes me feel a little claustrophobic.

If the whole route weren't scary enough, the 15 inch "choke point" described in the graphic is crazy. Reminds me of a trip I took to Lava Beds National Monument. The Catacombs was two parallel lava tubes with a tight crossover point that allowed you to do a loop, but the crossover was so tight, you couldn't even move on your hands and knees. Here's a picture I found of someone in the crossover:
And here's a video from the same group showing a guy inch-worming his way through it:

Under the best of conditions it was scary, now imagine doing something like this while it's flooded with water.
