This is about me too. I've never particularly cared for cats though so I'd never own one. Love dogs but there is certainly a limit I'd spend on one

If you can afford to save the cat, do it. Pets are family and should be a higher priority than fun.
That said, the allergies are a consideration. Cat needs to start staying indoors when it's too old to win a fight.

That sick cat will probably go another 3-4 years. I never had a cat in my life, grew up with border collies until 3 years ago. Got a free one that wife and daughters found on FB. Love the hell out of it though. He's a prick but it cracks me up. Him knocking my kid's homework off the table then looking at everyone like "yea bitch, what ya'll gonna do about it" Plus he stalks people and will play hide n seek.
ETA: He's indoors only though and downside is he's torn up our wood door trim. I don't have the heart to get him declawed but am considering getting front ones taken out and leaving the rear ones in. He's gotten better after I spray cat-a-way stuff on it but our downstairs trims are torn up and it looks awful. He ignored our carpet scratch post, I need to get a wooden one.

I don't understand. Is he sick?
he was bitten by our new across the street neighbor's husky about 5 months ago
4 or 5 year ago, he would have beaten that big dog down
he got feeble for a few weeks and we thought he was gonna die, but he got better
about 6 weeks ago, he started getting an abscess where the dog bit him and developed a huge lump on his back
in the last week or so, the abscess started bleeding where the bites were, and today, his skin broke out, he is bleeding a little worse and the whole area looks red, tender & sore
abscess is now as big as his head
we are looking at an exam fee, sedation, draining the abscess, antibiotics and likely a several month treatment plan
I think it's time, the wife is close to crying...

fwiw, if this was a young cat, I'd pay the money and not even think about it...

Is he eating? Using a litter box or going outside? Walking/getting around ok? Maybe the abcess can be treated with oral antibiotics and will be ok?
ETA I found blood on the floor — brought cat in — didn’t find anything and it wasn’t his urinary issues flaring up again. They gave him antibiotics “in case” And a day or so later I found a lump on his tail. The blood was likely from that butnwlildbut he was covered from the meds and required nothing further. Maybe it’ll be something simple??

Is he eating?
yes, and still killing chipmunks to supplement his always diet, we give him wet and dry food
quote:
Using a litter box or going outside?
he would already be out of my life if there was a litter box
he got a litter box for the 1st 2 weeks with us, and then we put him outside, we let him in when he wants
sometimes he sleeps with is, sometimes not...

Walking/getting around ok?
yes, maybe a little limp from bump last 2 weeks
quote:

maybe, but he is 16...

Depends on what’s wrong & if it will fix the issue or just prolong his life
Posted on 5/22/20 at 9:43 pm to dcbl
Not much, he's on his 9th life anyway.
Put him to sleep. This is coming from a lifetime cat owner and cats are my favorite animals. His kidneys will begin failing in the next year or two anyway and renal failure is basically a slow poisoning of themselves.
Just put him down with some dignity. Poor mee-nu.

Well take him to the vet, pay exam fee and go from there — it may not require anything rash. Good luck. I hate our fluff balls fur but I love the cat.

I’ll admit. I’m gonna flip when fluff ball dies — got her when our last child was in 4th grade — just showed up at home. That kid is now a sophomore in college. He’ll be 11 in September (or around there).

We got one when my daughter was 3. Now, she is 19, ole Beav is 16. Been an indoor/outdoor cat his whole life. Hate to even think about having to put him to sleep. So I'm spending whatever it takes to keep him around.

Sounds identical to my cat. We got him in the summer of 1997 and we didn't have to put him down until the spring of 2017. If your cat has lived this long already then I think he can last a few more years if you're willing to save him.

well, yeah
I have 4 kids and am paying just under $1000 a month for the 20 year old to be at Auburn
we are blessed, kid graduated with a 4 3 and got a 32 in the ACT, 33 with a super score
Bama offered a full ride, UGA offered to waive out of state tuition, and AU offered a 3/4 ride
I told the boy ROLL TIDE, but the wife said that he had worked hard enough to go where he wanted, and sometimes it's worth it to keep your powder dry for a more important fight...
cat will cost a minimum of $600 and probably well over $1,000, maybe even closer to $2,000
I can afford it, but it would crimp my style for doing fun shite with the 12 and 9 year old this summer
I do well, but am not an "OT baller"
fwiw, the 12 year old is allergic, but not so bad that it's an issue, we found out when he was 5 and the cat mostly stays outside...
My brotha...How in the hell did a post about cats turn into some my kid is smart / aubbie gump shite???

being honest

and I got my best advice on this page
I'm drinker than Cooter Brown on payday right now
what I'm going to do is take Pumpkin to the vet in Midfield tomorrow morning when they open.
Midfield is metro Bham and lower middle class black area of Bham
a little "hoody" in some parts maybe, but mostly " lower middle class" black families that are "working class"
very likely to be MUCH less expensive than close to where I live
anything under $600 I'm gonna go forward with, other than that?
I talk to the wife again... and we probably look for a rescue kitten...

My cat is always a minute from stalk mode. I won't see him for a bit, then I get up to grab something and a 4 legged heat seeking missle come's blazing from the west utility room and a self destruction mission for my ankle.
Cracks me up every single time, not to mention when he's under my bed and I don't know it. I start looking for a shirt or to make the bed and the damn kamikaze comes out of nowhere to wrap itself around my ankle an hug tight with it claws withdrawn completely.
It's awesome and unique to cats and their predatory instincts.

My kids will take turns running by the bed where he jumps out from underneath to grab them. He'll hang on for a second or so then let go and run back under the bed waiting for them to run by again, over and over and over

Also never fails, every time while reading a book or something he comes up and sits on it and just looks at me.
Mine doesn't really sit on the book, but he jumps on the bed and leans hard against me and just looks me dead in the face. For am hour. I think he just want to relax and be with me, you know. Cats are loyal too, not just dogs. You just don't realize that with other peoples cats, you have to get one and bond with it yourself. My cat is better than anyone elses cat and they would say the same thing about their cat, or your cat in this instance.

They are. I work 24 on 48 off. Every 3rd morning when I get up to go to work first thing I do of course is take a piss. Every single time my cat puts paws on counter next to me and reaches out like he's trying to shake my hand and meows at me. He'll do it the entire time. Only does it on mornings before I go to main job, the other mornings I get up he just stays in bed and stares at me. When I have uniform on and walking to the door to leave he rubs against my legs all the way to the door and purrs.
It may just be his way of saying good riddance you suck, but it is cute to me
