Say goodbye to your $1000 dollar hurricane deductible.

Why was this ever the case anyway? Insurance should be just that, for things you can't afford to happen.

I'm not sure all hurricane policies shouldn't be something like $20,000? At least $10,000.

Id be curious what it would be for a $50,000 deductible.

Yeah offering a $1000 dollar deductible for hurricanes is a recipe for disasters.

Most carriers in South Louisiana only offer 2% or 5%. So if your house is $250k then the deductible would be $5000. Probably one of the reasons they went bankrupt.

It also didn't help that they were severely undercutting the market with their rates.

Any thoughts on what will be the catalyst to LA south of I-10 being attractive?

I actually work for Allstate, have for 5 years, and help run an office in Baton Rouge.

The claims department is pretty good, and I've never had customers have any major issues with them.

Depending on where you live, we've been writing homes through allstate or North Light. What parish are you in?

They leaving FL too.

They tried to double my premium at renewal so my agent shopped and got me a better carrier with a lower premium than the original UPC premium.

Currently with Liberty Mutual, who I bought from when FEDNAT went under.

Good luck to homeowners in LA. Florida is going to see a similar impact and it doesn’t look promising.

Allstate writes in EBR. If you're with Liberty Mutual, I'm sure the premium is rather high. We're pretty competitive in EBR. Wouldn't be a bad idea to call a local office and get a quote.

Does this imply that current policies be cancelled?

I don't believe they can legally do that. They have to honor contractual obligations until they expire. The only exception would be if they declared bankruptcy.

We were able to get AllState for our homeowners in Livingston area last month after having UPC for the past 5 years. Premium was a little less than UPC which surprised me. We did get a new roof for $1000 last year so I’m glad we didnt wait too long to file the claim.

Is progressive still writing new policies in Louisiana?

No. They use their in-house agency to act as brokers. Depending on your zip code you might end up with HomeSite if they are still accepting business in your area.

I know they offer ASI for homeowners as well. That's another company I would be leery of. Not sure how much longer they'll write in the state.

I had Dover Bay (surplus lines through State Farm). They raised my premium 150% on renewal. they can do this because they are surplus lines. No changes in anything and I've had one claim during Katrina. No other claims.

Cocksuckers.

I got a policy through Kin (they specialize in LA and FL). Easy app process and great rates. So far anyway.

I went from 2700 with UPC to 3800 with Cajun. Insurance agent said be glad I had another option because with Citizens I would have at least doubled, maybe tripled. So I guess I’m lucky.

I just got a non-renew from Gulf States for a rental and called Kin....
Still researching them but process couldn't have been easier and price was higher than current (expected), but not ridiculous considering S La insurance situation....
