I don't buy the whole Helen Keller story. At the most she was hard of hearing and had astigmatism.

I think you’re right but you’ve got the cause & effect backwards. Encouraging women to work has made everything more expensive (to say nothing of the negative social consequences of children not being cared for by their parents in their infancy).

Education, houses, real estate, cars, taxes and just about everything else people need to have a basic standard of living costs more because you’ve got twice as many salaries in the economy chasing the same supply of goods.

If most people were honest about the real net earnings from the wife/lower paid spouse working, it rarely makes sense for the wife to work. Real net costs would be defined as subtracting out taxes (both payroll and the higher marginal income tax rate a couple will most likely incur to earn the lower salary), day care and transportation costs, it doesn’t make sense.
