University of Oregon lays off 282

"“Stay home, stay safe,” has proven hazardous to the financial health of Oregon’s public colleges.
Closing campuses to deprive the coronavirus of new victims will deprive Oregon’s public colleges of upwards to $100 million in revenue just in the current quarter.
Now, the 2020 version of college -- no dormitories, no cafeterias, no sports -- means no jobs for hundreds of employees.
The University of Oregon revealed Monday that it will lay off at least 282 employees, largely due to the loss of revenue from student lodging and food service. Oregon State University has yet to implement layoffs but it is actively cutting employees’ hours to reduce costs. Portland State University may not be far behind, an official there said."
"Across Oregon, its public universities collected more than half a billion dollars from housing and feeding students and from athletic revenue in 2019. That’s about 25% of their total operating revenue. For many colleges, this so-called “auxiliary” money is their second largest pool of revenue behind student tuition and fees."
"Michael Schill, University of Oregon president, said he will take a 12% pay cut. Before the cut he earned more than $700,000 a year."

This is going to be a huge problem for all colleges. My job directly relates to students being on campus. Online learning will likely make it obsolete.

Pretty sure Oregon falls under that “big arse state school that only cares about football” category. They’ll cut the Law School, medical school, or whatever they have before they cut funding for football.

Actual salary is $720,000 so his new salary with 12% reduction baked in is now $633,600 which is almost poverty line in some circles.

Expensive admin will probably be the first to be culled. Facility management, food service, etc. will be furloughed, but they are probably the first in line to be hired back whenever things open up again.
In operational terms, professors are revenue generators. Admin, for the most part, are not.
