Never made sense to me why general course credits are required in most University degree programs, ie, those redundant with high school (eg, Algebra, English, American History, etc)?

I like to UK model of a 3-year University degree. It’s more efficient. Get straight into the degree courses without all the repeat.

AP courses are a step in the right direction but I think US Universities are bloated and have many opportunities to be more efficient. This is one area.

1 year removed from degree is easy $25k of debt for too many students, much of which is paying for what the student already took in HS.

Nothing about the current University system is about cost savings, efficiency or a trained graduating class

I agree. English is important, but there is no reason a business major should have to take biology and calculus

Most people claim college degrees just show an employer that you can stick to a goal and achieve it.
LOL so I guess those 12 years of school prior don’t count in that sense?

Useless classes affords the university 1 more year of your tuition. No different than advisors who steer the kids wrong, and extend their stay.

Biology I could maybe get behind, but you and I have used calculus thousands of times in our lives after college.

I value of classical education. I enjoyed learning things I didn't know, it helped me learn to learn and think critically.

But most of you are gauge readers so I get it.

Graduating college is one of the least impressive things you can accomplish in this country. I don’t know why employers give a shite about them. I guess it’s an easy check in the box for the useless women in HR to qualify or disqualify people for jobs that the HR losers know nothing about in the first place.

The funny thing is that some people take those classes twice and are still dumb in those subjects.

A "well-rounded" college education is just an excuse for collecting more tuition and fees.

I got an accounting degree and one of the english classes i picked was on graphic novels. I wrote a paper on watchmen. That has absolutely nothing to do with becoming a cpa and while enjoyable was a huge waste of fricking time.

I understand your point, but if your English course was anything like the ones I had to take for my business degree in college, those 4-6 page papers you had to write every single fricking week helped hone your writing and communications skills. even in accounting, you often have to write out summaries for period ending analysis, just as an example, that could be pages long with an audience of executives that need the numbers broken down into a story they can grasp.

I got an accounting degree and the English class I took helps me tremendously as a CPA because I write technical papers to taxing jurisdictions all the time.

i hear you but you had to take english compostion as a frshman then take this second level class that they had a few diff topics to pick from. the one was good enough imo.

Plus you still had to take communication studies and public speaking.

I remodeled a house. I needed to understand all sorts of calculus theorums. I've used right triangles to measure distances before, etc, etc.

Because you charge money. Universities are for-profit entities and there's been nothing more lucrative than government back student loans to stuff their coffers and raise their tuition rates.

It's even more insane when you hear the left ramble about the student loan crisis and then immediately follow it up with support towards more public funding for universities.

Universities are like an atheist church.
