I see your point. Considering this boards base audience is LA and LSUs largest alumni base outside of LA is Houston, most profit directly or indirectly off of higher oil.

I'm a poors but I always paid the $25 baggage check fee to avoid those cheap arse idiots.

Answer me this. How is it I can check a bag for free with SW and still pay for a ticket that is almost always comparable or lower than United?

Southwest is smart though. They account for all the 'frills' in the fare price and use that as a sales pitch. And it works!
United, American, Delta however only rely on their legacy status and FF programs.

American and United will be gone within 10 years. Delta seems to be doing alright and I haven't noticed any changes in service, but American took a brutal hit by merging with US Air which was the worst airline in existence.
With Southwest expanding and with Delta holding steady, it's hard to see AA and UA staying in the black (they're probably already in the red)

sort of true, but not necessarily the rule, all of that crap is a big poker game among the airlines, played with house money, and not not necessarily played by the brightest bulbs in the fixtures

1. They're overdoing it. United, like American and Delta, feels the need to fly "everywhere" when it's really not needed.
2. The fleet is too expensive. Delta primarily buys MD, while United appears to buy mostly Airbus. The difference is roughly $50M. Southwest hasn't been tempted by the juggernauts that Airbus is throwing out there- they stick to the 737 and it works. You really don't need 800+ passengers on a single flight- you just need your flight to be full.

Because there are a 1,000 other variables into the price of a ticket?
But bags fly free isn't one of them for SW. The amount of fuel put on a plane is for distance and weight. Your airfare takes fuel cost into consideration. Your bags are not weightless. You are being charged for bags.

Delta already does this. They have basic economy which is a saver ticket that comes with limited benefits and you get assigned a seat at check in. Then they have the regular tickets. Which is exactly what United seems to be doing. I'm not sure what people are upset about.

it's a copycat industry pretty much since deregulation, Crandall may have been the last innovator in that industry, but it's now a bunch of schmucks that were boot licks to guys like him that are running the ship right now, ...into the inevitable iceberg

I'm with you on that one. Never flew with them, never will. I don't expect much when I fly anymore though. Just a seat and a small water bottle.
