re: Unions are outdated. It is 2023 not 1923

The currency was no good anywhere else, so the workers couldn't leave or take vacation anywhere else because they'd have no money to use. Crazy.
Company towns (miners were basically indentured servants with no escape)

UPS drivers make $100,000+ a year when topped out (and it only takes 4 years) with free health, eye and dental insurance. Part timers also get these same full time benefits.
You think this is a positive?

Dude, I'm 53 years old.
You are a whippersnapper in my book!
You said 3 generations in the mines, where?
Have been less around unions the past 20 years so good to hear you input. That being said, anytime something gets big, the odds are probable they become more corrupt and inefficient.
Big government
Big religion
Big corporate
Big military
Big education
Since 1980 this country has embraced big everything when regional and local are usually the best long term solution. As Joe Craft got access to lots of western land I am guessing out coal output will rise but that will be machines, not more human jobs.
If you are early 50's and grew up you have to have seen where mechanization has replaced labor in railroads and mining. My question stands, how many "new" jobs are either creating now (D) or (R)?

Jeff Bezos’s wet dream is to recreate those in space.
It’s frightening that he’s such a huge fan of The Expanse, bc he clearly read those and took the exact opposite lesson from the Belters than was intended

Very true. My dad was a coal miner, 3rd generation
I was under the impression that he worked for the railroad.

Railroad workers are not allowed to strike
Pretty much true and that's why most railroad employees will not be voting for the current president.

He's very cognizant of that they don't do very much, but still has that money cut out of his paycheck.
This is one side of the argument and its usually from those that always had a union job. They take it for granted. The longer someone has been employed with the railroad, the more they seem to think they can do better without a union. They may brag about having 30 years with the railroad. Well, ask another guy with only a few years with the railroad, but over 30 years in the workforce with no union representation before that, and you will hear how grateful they are to have a union.
ETA: Also, what they dont realize is their union dues are pennies compared to the pay cut they would take without a union.

The company makes $100 Billion on the backs of their employees. Yes, it is positive to reward your employees. Try not be so jealous because the average working American is getting paid with great benefits.

No, I just received a good college education and don't need a union to get a job

I never realized unions "get" people jobs.
Your college education shows.

Nothing more embarrassing than being pissed off at your fellow American for getting very good pay and great benefits from a multi billion dollar corporation. I bet these are the same people that will bitch about the middle class dying.
