I’d argue sue happy parents that have made it next to impossible to discipline kids are a good chunk of the reason teachers have unions to begin with.

Tradesman unions are good. The kind where guys are hired out of the union hall for construction work.

Mfg unions and public employee unions are past their time and need to go.

I'm curious for your reasoning saying one good and one is bad. I own a vertically integrated company that has both skilled trades on construction sites and a manufacturing facility. I see no reason for a union in either case, but I'm admittedly biased because of my position. That and the local trade union has purposely vandalized my jobs because we aren't union.

Unions helped create a bunch of important occupational safety improvements. That remains true today.

Beyond that... they aren't very good at all.

That is a pretty big deal though

i think numerous people said they were important in the past. especially the trade jobs where people were dying on the reg with unsafe conditions.

the problem people have with most unions today is the protection of bad actors in Police, Teaching, etc.

i always was taught to hate unions growing up, but part of my de-neoconning in my 20s was learning that they did have a benefit in the past. but when they got tied into the mob and politics, it took a turn.

i'm not opposed to them in general, but i think they just serve as fundraisers for the DNC and protection of wants and feels of the leadership more than protection of a worker.

also the concept of being forced to join something for employment shouldn't sit well with anybody.

I’m in the union and you can get fired. I work for a trade union, in a right to work state. It’s a lot different than teachers, auto, etc.

"Basically, are unions not forms of domestic terrorism?"

You aren't interested in a debate.

Teachers Unions are solely responsible for the year of lost education of students in many places. Don’t bullshite me that virtual learning is great, it is not.

Daycare workers have been open and watching kids the entire time and if there was a plague of daycare workers dying we would know.

The only union worse than teachers unions is the police unions. But that bar is so low it’s comical.

I work in a union environment, in a management capacity, and deal/fight with them daily. With that said, I love the union. If it wasn't for them, chances are, I wouldn't have the benefits I do. As a salaried person I'm paid time and half for overtime, double time for Sundays, and triple time for holidays. I also have 17 paid holidays that I usually work since I'm in maintenance. When I was hired, I had 21 paid holidays but lost 4 in the last contract. Again, I love the union even though ours is a pain in my arse.

That's a little crazy. I have never known a union to stick up for "management" (i.e. anyone but its members).

When I was a coop student at a plant, I got bitched out for using the vending machine in the "union" lunch room. I mean, over the course of a generation these fricks have gone from lobbying for hardhats to gatekeeping a fricking snack machine.

Yea, having to hire some knuckledragger at 100 an hour to push a broom on your jobsite when your highest paid broom pusher makes 17 and hour is great!

Unions help maintain the balance of power. Sometimes it dips one way or the other but it ends up balancing out.

i have this discussion with my fil all of the time. he retired as a life long union man.

i tell him that unions are the same as affirmative action. in their inception, they were good/necessary. now they are completely useless.

in a capitalist society an individual can prove his/her worth, and be paid accordingly. you may have to change industries, or move locations, but you can find fair compensation.

So, you agree unions have outlasted their usefulness?

nope, but they have to have their feet held to the fire as do management, and even our political "leaders," everyone needs to be held accountable

This. NOt sure the reason why, whether sue happy parents or other reasons, but teachers are put in a trick bag when it comes to trying to control their classes these days. Hard to have a good learning environment when teachers are put in a position where they can't have proper discipline in the classroom and have little recourse over disruptive students.

Private sector unions can be a benefit to the common good. Public sector unions will never do so.
