Uninsured driver rates i believe are around 13% of motorist on road in Louisiana.. Underinsured however far exceeds that.

Vast majority have a minimum limits policy ($15k per person; $30k per accident).

You get popped pretty good, requiring an ambulance ride and an ER visit with overnight stay and it's gone already.

The thing that sets it apart from other insurances is that its relatively cheap.

That should tell you something. Not going to debate whether you should/shouldn't carry it, but the price is relative with ALL insurance. Price is not a good way to compare across different types of insurance. The less likely it has to pay and/or the lower the coverage, the cheaper it is. Insurance companies aren't making it cheap out of the kindness of their heart; it is cheap because it has a very low likelihood of paying out.

It is like saying a long-term care policy is cheap for a 24 year old - of course it is, but it doesn't necessarily mean you should carry it.

lucky you. My family is expensive. Not going to debate it anymore, just too lazy and don't care that much. but for just a few bucks a month, it's well worth it.

Don't waste breath. He's the board contrarian on UM and pops up in every thread on the subject daring people to convince him that he needs it. Never mind all the credible arguments for owning such an incredibly cheap financial tool - you won't convince him otherwise. Like most people, he'll have to find out the hard way if he is to ever discover why he needs it - though I certainly hope he never has to and can live a long prosperous life saving $10/month without it

It's just as high as liability on my policy. But if you get in an accident and you can never work again you will collect around $9,000 total if the other driver has a basic policy, zero if he is uninsured.

He probably doesn't.

I had a democrat pull out in front of me on airline about 6 years ago. T-boned him at 55-60 without having time to touch the brake. He actually had insurance but just the minimum. I had a $50000 UM policy limit and maxed both out with a torn muscle in my back and a seperated shoulder from my seatbelt. Glad I had it.

Well in their defense, it is a misleading title. Full coverage means you are fully covered for everything to most people. I don't deal with this kind of stuff like you law folks do, but I bet most people have no idea what they are and aren't covered for.

that's why I called the broker a dumbass for not educating his customer. I'm not blaming the insured. The agents are misleading, no doubt.

People would rather pay less than more. The dumbassery of it all actually works out in the end for so many of them. They cause hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages and get released for their 15/30. I am about to settle my 3rd ever "from the hip pocket" case this week.

I couldn't tell you what my limits are off the top of my head. I have been meaning to raise them though so I'm glad this thread reminded me. It's just not a priority for most people until they get smashed.

Insurance in Louisiana does suck though. I'm not sure how bad it is everywhere else, but having to carry all of this bullshite because other people are stupid sucks.

That's not the only reason.
