Better hope you're not out of work because of your accident.

Most likely at a % of your monthly wages. Different people have different needs, but UM is pretty cheap to add.

You absolutely need it. Buddy of mine got rearended. Has health insurance to cover his back and neck surgery. But nothing to cover losing his job because he could not work for six months or losing his house because he could not pay his mortgage. So many drivers out there are uninsured that you are playing Russian roulette if you do not have UM.

Does your disability policy pay your full salary? I highly doubt it. Where will the difference come from? Did you know that most disability policies will try to cut you off after 24 months?

UM is cheap. Crazy not too have it in a state full of drunk uninsured drivers

If you're worried about income you have to keep in mind that you cannot buy UM at a higher limit than your liability limits. So, worst(injury) case, you collect your full limits. Unfortunately, very few people have high enough limits to take care of significant income losses. It's amazing how many policies I see at 25/50 or 15/30.

UM/UIM is like any other type of insurance. You don't need it until you do. And if you ever need it and have it, you will be very, very happy that you did. The thing that sets it apart from other insurances is that its relatively cheap. I think mine is like 10% of my total premium. For the protection that it gives you (especially with the incredibly low minimum policy limits in Louisiana), it is well worth it.

You ONLY need it if you do not carry collision insurance, if you have collision there is no need for it. If you have liability only then you BETTER have it.

Wrong. UM only covers medical, not property damage.

It is insurance not a lottery ticket. You are planning for a highly unlikely bad event. Everyone knows the few horror stories but no one talks about the vast majority who throw money in a hole with insurance.

There are so many people that drive around without insurance it's crazy. I have it just because of that.

There is UMPD coverage if you choose not to carry Comp/Collision.

Don't know about all states but that is not true in the state of Texas.

I'm speaking LA only. State by state the laws vary so much they don't belong in the same conversation. I wish LA would go "no fault", personally.

lucky you. My family is expensive. Not going to debate it anymore, just too lazy and don't care that much. but for just a few bucks a month, it's well worth it.
