Disability insurance sucks. You have to jump through hoops to prove disability, and there are usually a lot of conditions precedent to payment. Some also have caps on payments like a max per month and are subject to offset by collateral sources like social security disability.

My dad is going through this now. An uninsured motorist crossed the center line and hit him, causing his vehicle to flip off of the highway. Completely totaled his ride and he had to go to the emergency room to check for Trauma. He is just beginning to get his hospital bills in and his health insurance has rejected them. He has met with a lawyer and his uninsured motorist insurance should be covering them.

If you live in the South you need UM. It's not that expensive. I did insurance defense for years and will always tell people do not waive UM.
