We have a few 70’s era underground homes around here. What was the attraction or thinking? Utilities costs?

If it passes inspection I would live in it in a heartbeat.

Troglodytes don’t like to be above ground.

Hobbits make good neighbors.

Because hobbit hole means comfort

I bet the Wi-Fi password is “The Shire”

"They were made of sod, Dad".

I wouldn’t call that underground.
Just an earth roof.
Just an earth roof.

I’m betting it is a great insulator.

You have never really lived until you have mowed a roof.

70 degrees all the time, hurricane proof, tornado proof, never have to paint it, you can mow your house and it looks awesome. The list goes on forever.

Not with those picture windows on the south side of the house.
A nuclear blast would blow through that with ease.
You need small or no windows for the best protection from the blast. Then you have fallout to worry about in the days or weeks following the blast.
I am all for building a house in a hill, but you have to make sure you are elevated from your surroundings to avoid flooding. A good seal is a must to stop water that naturally permeates the ground.

Don’t have to put on a new roof every 20 years. But I wonder how the drainage is and if there is any water intrusion

well it sucks when you have to cut the grass on your roof, but underground living spaces stay 70 degrees year round and only need bare minimum for heating and cooling.
so A/C & heating costs are 10% of regular homes plus zero maint for roof shingles or siding, seems like its the cheapest cost of living unit you could live in

I'd have me a few tomato plants on top.

That house in the side of a hill overlooking a valley where your garden, ponds, pastures, barns, and your cows roam would be like heaven.

Who says you have to mow it?

Berm houses. They have some in Mississippi.
