If it makes you feel any better they’re probably also doing cocaine and other class B substances in their friends bedrooms before going out there.

At that spot there won’t be a report back.

You think this only happens at Madi Gras? You're surprised that people who celebrate debauchery don't have a moral compass?

I won’t bash you for your observation. I agree it’s a problem, and I’ll also admit that my kids participated (2 of 3 did).

I didn’t condone the drinking and really didn’t know the extent of it at the time.

I was raised in an era when youthful drinking was tacitly allowed but monitored by parents. I think a lot of parents these days are actually glad that their kids are actually out and socializing with peers instead of just on social media all the time.

But the dynamic on the parade route is that there is a huge and densely packed group of high schoolers doing binge drinking, smoking pot, and lots of groping and shite in these tight crowds, and they really don’t have any experience with it.

And they don’t have the type of friend groups to keep an eye on each other to make sure they aren’t getting in over their head.

I agree it’s a problem, but simply chastising parents is not gonna cut it. The vast majority of the parents don’t really know what’s going on.

I figured things out after the first year of allowing my high schoolers to go join that mass of bodies. After that, I told them they had to check in every half hour and that I wanted to actually see them at my spot.

I could tell my son was getting drunk and I shut it down for him. He wasn’t happy.

It’s tough being one of only a small group of parent at your kids school to try to hold the line.

The only difference between Mardi Gras on the Avenue in 2025 and Mardi Gras on the Avenue when I was in high school 20+ years ago, when it comes to underage drinking, is that there is now more noticeable marijuana usage. It was still there 20 years ago, just not as out in the open.

You're not a true New Orleanian if you aren't getting fricked up at that age during Mardi Gras!
