Jamie Brock, 30-year veteran volunteer firefighter who responded to the school after the shooting, took down the suspect on the playground, Smith said.

Brock was not armed, officials said.

Sheriff John Skipper said Brock likely prevented more shots from being fired by confronting the shooter and taking him down.

"Mr. Brock is a big fellow," Skipper said.

Scott Stoller, with Anderson County Emergency Medical Services, said Brock wants to stay quiet and humble, and said he did "what any other firefighter would do."

He was a law abiding citizen in a gun free zone. The criminal however didn't give a shite about laws.

Right because the shooter is totally caring about those gun laws he broke while not giving a damn about those murder/attempted murder charges he is about to face.

I'd rather someone shooting children just be shot.

Well, it took the armed police about seven minutes to arrive on scene. I'm sure if they had gotten there first, the shooter would have been shot...however in seven minutes, the shooter could have done A LOT more harm.

If only one of the dead would have tried to talk to him, instead of crying and screaming for their life while he murdered them.

This is a situation where the term hero is appropriately used. Never understood calling sports or political figures hero. Not applicable at all.

This little guy was still in critical condition last night after being shot in the leg. An update on him is expected shortly.

The other 2 victims have been released.
