The UK has reached "a perilous turning point", Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said, as he set out a raft of new coronavirus restrictions for England which could last for up to six months.
Shop staff will have to wear face masks and weddings will be limited to a maximum of 15 people, under the rules.
Fines for breaking laws on gatherings and not wearing a mask will increase to £200 for a first offence.
It comes as the number of UK cases rose by 4,926 on Tuesday, government figures showed, with deaths increasing by 37.
Speaking in the House of Common, the prime minister told MPs: "We always knew that while we might have driven the virus into retreat, the prospect of a second wave was real. I'm sorry to say that, as in Spain and France and many other countries, we've reached a perilous turning point.
But he said this was "by no means a return to the full lockdown of March", with no general instructions to stay at home. Businesses, schools, colleges and universities will remain open.
Attendance figures show the number of schools in England sending home groups of pupils due to Covid-19 incidents quadrupled in a week.

Under the new measures for England:
Office workers are being told to work from home again if possible,
Penalties for not wearing a mask or gathering in groups of more than six will increase to £200 on the first offence
From Thursday 24 September, all pubs, bars and restaurants will be restricted to table service only. Takeaways can continue
Also from Thursday, hospitality venues must close at 22:00 - which means shutting then, not calling for last orders (in Scotland the same curfew rule comes into force on Friday)
Exemptions to the "rule of six" will be cut back from Thursday, meaning indoor team sports such as five-a-side football matches will end
Face coverings must be worn by taxi drivers and passengers from Wednesday
Retail staff and customers in indoor hospitality venues will also have to wear masks from Thursday, except when seated at a table to eat or drink
From Monday 28 September, only 15 people will be able to attend weddings and civil partnerships, in groups of six. Funerals can still take place with up to 30 people
Also from 28 September, you can only play indoor sports in groups of less than six
The planned return of spectators to sports venues will now not go ahead from 1 October
A lot of these restrictions never went away in the US.

Those in power just don't want to let go of it
2020 has been a wet dream for control hungry politicians.

Dawgfan assured me that everyone is doing better than the US.

Restrictions on Covid-19
Why haven't we thought about this before? Hell, all we need to do is post restrictions on where the damn virus is allowed and problem solved. We can defeat this with more regulations.

28 people died yesterday
Everyone over 50 and 3 had underlying health conditions.
My boss (57) died unexpectedly a month ago suspected heart attack out the blue. Will we be banning things based on this?
Incredibly biased as this is going to ruin my wedding.

When is their election?
I don't believe elections work the same way over there as they here. They can schedule an election at anytime as far as I know.

Yep. All the big government socialists and coronabros were rooting for Sweden to fall on its arse but it never happened. Now they're saying it's because Sweden has a "healthy" and a "sensible" population. The Swedish government trusted its people to do the right thing and they did. It's too bad our own government treated us like we were children.

They had one last year. Parliament has a fixed 5 year term but the government can call a snap election at anytime. There is virtually no chance that a snap election will be called the governing Conservative Party has one of the largest majorities since WW II.

The only true solution to this is to let all of the people who want to wear a mask and stay inside for the rest of their life go to Australia. The rest of us can go back to normal, only count deaths DUE to COVID instead of WITH COVID, or better yet, stop counting altogether.

and to think, initially they were going to go the route of Sweden but chickened out.
I don't know how these public health folks look at the past 6 months and determine lockdowns are a viable option.

"I want this country to realize that we stand on the edge of oblivion. I want every man, woman and child to understand how close we are to chaos. I want everyone to remember why they need us!"

Congratulations, Britain. You let the flu turn your country into Norsefire.

But the media told us Europe has it under control and Trump killed everyone while Europe was back to normal.
