Those benefits are possible because they have us providing most of the defense spending and they had a homogeneous makeup for a long time. Now they have untold millions more people who will not contribute anything but more mouths to feed and ever increasing crime.

I just read several articles about this subject. I would have never thought that Mississippi would be a top economy in Europe

Go read any blog or watch any video of an American moving to Europe or the UK and the adjustment. Pretty universally the theme is "I've learned to live without [insert goods, services, SOL] and it's made me so much happier".

Space, salary, options, stores being open after a certain time, etc. It's just a very downsized life compared to your average middle-middle class life in the US.

They pay a lot more in taxes than we do

And taxes are spread much more evenly across economic classes in Europe. In the US, the bottom 50% of income earners pay effectively no federal taxes and the next 25% pay a very small amount. The top economic classes and effectively pay for everything.

In most European countries, the lower and middle class pay a significant amount of taxes.

One of the more comedic things to watch in politics is the constant call for a European-style benefits system but you never hear those same politicians talk about adopting their tax systems.

Yet those Brits travelled here but most Americans can’t afford to go to England. Idk. Maybe they just value different things? Like they live more frugally but have extra to travel?

I would choose dentistry over travel any day.

I don't think middle class people have multi-hundred thousand dollar RVs. I think the guy who told him that wants to believe he is middle class but is not.

I learned this when booking trips overseas. Do not trust someone's review if they are from the UK on how nice a place is or how good the service is. They have a much, much lower expectation than Americans

this is actually true. You have to round down a star if you realize mostly Europeans are reviewing.

A peak behind the curtain would reveal severe credit debt.

The entire world is drowning in debt, it's the basis of all world economies and economics. Started with the Fed in 1913, picked up steam with Breton-Woods in 1944 and began exponential acceleration in 1971 when Nixon took the dollar off the gold standard.

Alas, it will all end relatively soon; hold onto your jocks during the next twenty years or so.

Or do Americans make significantly more than the middle class British person?

My exact job in London would pay me at least 50% less than I make in the US, and that's gross, not net.

While there is likely debt involved, it’s amazing what citizens can do with their own money when they aren’t taxed to hell to fund a Nanny State.

That was my first thought as well, but it's not as much as I thought it would be.

Including mortgages, the average UK citizen's debt is just under $89k while the average US citizen's debt is just under $102k.

Interestingly, once you remove mortgages from the equation they are nearly the same ($23,276 UK vs $23,317 US).

Where I think a big chunk of the difference comes in is with salary and taxation. The annual tax revenue of the UK is around 35% of their GDP while the average here in the US is around 27%. Meanwhile, the overall average salary in the UK comes out to ~$50,728 while the average salary in the US comes to ~$63,795.

So higher taxes + lower pay = lower average lifestyle.

Well, hello vague statement.

Better how? Are the incomes in Spain and Italy lower than the US? Yes. Is the COL there about 60% of what is is in the US? Yes.

It could be argued that they live a more stress free lifestyle without needing to earn as much as Americans.

I can't think of any. My pets have better access to healthcare than they do (my vet doesn't go on strikes either). My dad is a British citizen, I was born there and hold dual-citizenship, and he has never looked at going back to live in the UK. The standard of living he has made for himself here by far eclipse's his peers and his sister's. The crushing tax burden and nickel-&-diming of their citizens makes life a miserable prospect for those not independently wealthy. Even the wealthy are fleeing the country, new tax proposals that would tax the total value of all held assets, including those held outside of the UK, on an annual basis. Truly a stupid and miserable little island now.

In terms of financial freedom and stability, we do much better. You think their government safety nets are secure but even Spain is facing severe pressure to fund its public benefits and pensions. Spain is not a very stable economy, tourism is lagging, foreign investment is drying up, and, like many EU countries, the wealthiest citizens are moving away by the thousands.

If you are factoring in those stats when it comes to Mississippi, it really makes a difference if you are white or black.
