At the current rates in NOLA and BR, Uber it's a ripoff for drivers. Yeah, there are sometimes particular circumstances where a driver can make some coin, but the market in NOLA is so over saturated with drivers, there are not that many surges anymore, and the ones that there are are short lived.
After doing a little over 400 rides on Uber, they would have to double the rates for me to consider driving again.
And as a driver, you get some shitty passengers that think for a $5 ride, they are riding in a limo.
And I had one passenger near the end of my driving career tell me that the inside of my car smelled like Marijuana. And she said she could tell I just smoked a joint in the car. I told the bitch that's really weird because I don't let anyone smoke anything in my car and I haven't personally smoked in 20 years. But she was angling to complain to Uber and get Uber to comp the ride.

Is it bad that I use Uber to shuttle my kids around town when my wife or I cannot pick them up or bring them places?

I part time drive for uber and the fare is based on time and distance. I love the long hauls. Especially if I pick you up in a surge zone where it's busy.

I just tell them that's it's okay to get in the car with this person you don't know. The drive already knows where you need to go. Just don't talk to them. Get in the car, keep your mouth shut and get out when you arrive at your destination.

I guess I could get trashed and drive home through Metairie and kill an innocent family on their way home from whatever chain restaurant they were eating at. Sorry for doing the responsible thing while also trying to be considerate of those poor Uber drivers who may have to head back across with no fare.

No. The way it works is that drivers are not provided the destination until after they accept the ride. At that point, they have a short window of time to cancel.
Unless you make it worth their while for the empty ride back they will have to make then what is the benefit for the driver to take you across the lake?

Uber prices the ride. They can't predict whether the driver will be able to get a ride back or not. So it really isn't on Uber to create a surcharge. If they do then it will be spread across all rides and everyone will pay more.
It seems to me that you took the right approach by letting the driver know ahead of time. Not sure if you did, but it probably would be a good idea to let him also know ahead of time how much cash you will be tipping on top of the Uber fare. That way they may be more willing to accept the ride if it becomes mutually beneficial.

Technically, a Uber driver is not supposed to accept a rider that is under 18.

Not sure it's been mentioned but you can now set a destination point so that you can only accept trips going to wherever you're going.
That should help to get a ride back to the south shore. Just park yourself on 190 and you should get a trip pretty quick. I haven't driven in a while but I have a friend that's been driving a lot in the Mandeville/Covington area and has had multiple trips to the south shore from the north shore each day.

They should charge $100-$110 to go to or from the northshore...they're right, it's going to be an empty car going back. They need that to cover opportunity cost.
