Who gives a shite about ship names. They could call it the USS Bush Did 9/11 for all I care, as long as it gets the job done.

Disclaimer: Bush did not do 9/11

Those planes are unarmed.

We knew that.

And the Russys knew we knew that

I heard on the news this morning that while unarmed, at least one of those Russian SU-24's was carrying intelligence collection pods to gather information on the electronic signatures of our defensive systems.

They also said on the news that in addition to being an intelligence gathering mission, this was that son of a bitch Putin basically showing our European allies (who this ship was operating with at that time on a NATO mission) that he can basically do what he wants and our weak leadership in Washington won't do shite. Remember when the Iranians captured a navy boat not long ago and they paraded our sailors on their knees with their hands on their heads and Washington didn't say or do shite? That sent a message to Putin that Obama is feckless and won't do shite about things like this.

One thing I'm wondering about though is why did a US Navy destroyer allow these fighters to approach so close without ever going to general quarters?

Come on, darth. This wasn't out of the ordinary 30 years ago.

Not saying it's not happened in the past. But that does not change the fact that when a US Navy vessel identifies incoming aircraft approaching at high speed, once those aircraft reach a certain point, general quarters are called so the ship is ready for whatever could happen.

Did Putin respond that this was false and he already has everything he needs from Hillary?

Doesn't look like general quarters to me

that was a well known "freedom of navagation" mission. I guarantee you those ships were at general quarters during this time.

Russian electronic capabilities are vastly overrated.

They only get what the Chinese sell them (which they stole from us).

My knowledge goes far more towards land warfare. But I do know that all US ships have a set defensive zone around them that if an unidentified or unfriendly ship or plane enters, the ship goes to general quarters so it is ready in case something goes down. Or at least that used to be the case.

Hell, we shot down an Iranian passenger jet in the Persian Gulf back in the 80s because it approached too close to our ships.

This could be seen as a friendly overture. They were just playing around. Keeping up international relations.

Didn't they already withdraw from Syria? I remember hearing that Putin just out of the blue declared victory and said they were pulling out a few weeks ago.

Good question.. I can only speculate that they new in advance the jets were unarmed and did not want to give the Russians too much data with which the Russian systems could monitor while buzzing our destroyer...

I am only guessing...

Another question is what if any air support was in the area and what role did they play...

Yea they pulled out a few weeks ago

They were not in Syria to take on ISIS despite what the Russian propaganda media was saying.

Well this took place in the Baltic during a joint exercise with NATO members. And if you'll look at a map, you'll see the Baltic is a pretty small sea where you'd never be out of the range of land based air assists. I'd imagine the closest air assets would have been either Polish or German fighters.

I'd say their main goal was to prop up Assad. And to be honest, looking at what's happened to other Middle East countries that have their dictator driven from power, I think it's best Assad stays.
