Slavery has been around for thousands of years and wasn't always based on race. In the days of the Roman Empire, the Romans didn't care what color your skin was or where in Europe or Africa you hailed from, they just cared if you were a Roman citizen. If you weren't a citizen, they could treat you like shite and get away with it. No questions asked.
This idea of skin color being a factor in one's inherent superiority is a relatively modern idea. However, it was an idea that Southerners embraced when it came to chattel slavery.

absolutely yes. There were some black / creole soldiers who fought under Stonewall Jackson's command. I don't know the specific details. In the Southeast Louisiana area, specifically the Northshore. Creole- black mixed people were referred to as "Freejacks". The term is all but gone I haven't heard it used in many many years I am 54 and heard it said by older folks when I was young. I saw a story on the SLU channel on cable tv a long time ago. it was done by samuel Hyde who is a professor at SLU who specializes in Southeast Louisiana and Northshore history. He said that Freejack term came from free slaves who fought under Jackson and they were known then as freejacks.

Because there were no “kings” selling white people like there were in Africa at the time selling black people.
But if you go back in history a little further, there have been much more than 4 million white slaves.

People were not enslaved because of their race. Or religion. Or anything else, other than the fact that they were vulnerable.
That said, one big difference in this country vs others, is that slaves couldn't easily "blend in" as they were easily identifiable due to being black.
