Metro Council members also agreed to spend $1.3 million in unallocated disaster recovery funds from Hurricanes Gustav and Ike to finish refurbishing a building that will serve as the agency's new headquarters.
Geez, these people steal from the elderly, and the Metro Council's response is to steal from taxpayers and give more to COA.
The most unbelievable thing is that there are still voters in BR that want to give LA government even more.

They even admitted they don't even have an estimate as to what it will cost. They just want to be able to use everything in the fund.

You guys are missing a few things.
Last night besides Okaying the tax, the Council approved giving the EBRCOA 1.3 Million dollars to remodel their existing HQ. WhY?
Just a minor clarification. It's to remodel another space that's owned by the City-Parish.

A second question, people are forgetting is that the COA already had a 3.27 million dollar a year revenue stream. Are they losing this revenue stream/ I seriously doubt they lose all of it.
Which is one of the reasons why I voted against the tax in November.

This government on both the local and state level is corrupt and it's only going to continue to get worse and worse with the currents "folks" in charge.
Even with the obvious waste of the tax payers money, JBE and his group of trolls will keep on crying that the state is flat broke and keep his blind eye turned the other way.
We R'r Br'r.

The voting base in Baton Rouge is NOT the same as the tax base.

Council people tend to be absent for meetings for one reason or another (usually it's one of them). I don't understand the problem here.
It is inexcusable to miss the meeting last night with the agenda they had.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on this matter and my actions. If you would provide a phone number, I will be happy to call you and explain how this was a decision I made after very careful and critical conversations and research. A no vote last night would have meant a lawsuit the Council would not win. We do have in place safeguards that can control the tax dollars if we feel the COA is not using tax dollars in the appropriate manner.

Its not this cut and dry - the city has already spent $600,000 on this building. The 1.3 million is federal disaster recovery money that has to be used or the city will lose it. they chose to use it to remodel the building and are charging the COA $3500/month rent. Still not ideal but not as simple as "council just gave them 1.3 Million."

They could have given less than the 2.2, they couldn't legally give 0.0, but could have given a very small amount of the total tax revenue.

It sure doesn't sound like these safeguards have been working.

Here is why that is BS. The "safeguards" she speaks of is that the COA has to come back for an annual renewal of the millage BUT..
If her contention is that they couldn't reduce or repeal the millage because of "a lawsuit the Council would not win." Then explain to me how the threat of a lawsuit will change in 12 months. SERIOUSLY explain to me how, if that is the reasoning, letting a year go by somehow alters the facts. Is this "control" if the simple threat of a lawsuit defeats it? GTFO.

Delgado voted "yes" to allow the tax to go on the November ballot, knowing the financial mismanagement that was going on, so he's even more to blame for it than that. Remember that when you hear him now criticizing the COA.

Not city could have potentially repurposed the $1.3M, but it would have to be a project that satisfies pretty strict HUD requirements. They would also have to repay the money already spent on the building through federal disaster money since it would no longer comply with the HUD requirements.

That's not true. A vote to defer the vote to approve the millage would've started a lawsuit. That's why she voted yes - because she couldn't delay the approval vote any longer.

I think the number cited at the meeting was $2,300 but even at $3,500 that isn't even remotely close to market rate.
And, as a guy who spoke against the COA said at the meeting, we need to quit talking about this federal money like it just comes out of the air. It is still OUR TAX MONEY and "use it or lose it" is not the way to run a government. We could use that 1.3 million for other parish projects. It was in no way dedicated to this goat frick.

I'll tell you with 100% confidence he voted for allowing us to vote for it b/c he thought it would fail and rightly so.

A snip of what I wrote to her:
quote:
Gutless, spineless and voting against the wishes of your constituents will ensure you have a short-term career on the Baton Rouge Metro City Council. The good news is that the talk of the formation of St. George will pick up even more steam and property values in Chauna Banks, Erika Green or Tara Walker’s district are significantly less (and will continue to be with Big Bird, Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee leading them) than the people you “serve.” I say this because the only way you will get “re-elected” to the BR Metro Council is if you decide to relocate to one of these districts.
