I wear one probably 3-4 times a year but I rent because I don't want to wear the same one to every event
That's why you get different vests/bow ties
Wear 1-3 a year and don't plan on getting fat: buy

Kinda what I was thinking!

Think I paid $95 last week
Exactly. For a wedding they shouldn't be more than $100. Sometimes the groom wears a slightly different one and I might be a little more but groomsmen shouldn't be paying more than that.

Tuxedo - Rent or Buy? Along these lines, what is an acceptable price for groomsmen to pay to rent a Tux? Getting married soon and the Tuxedo that I have picked out is gonna run the groomsmen around $250. I am contemplating tossing $100 toward each of theirs to bring their OOP expense to $150. Is this necessary? It's been years since I've rented one.
If you feel the need to supplement why get one in the first place?
Manuel Martinez made one for me ten years ago, when I used it several times a year. As I've gotten older I wear it once maybe twice a year but it is tailor made, comfortable and classic so it will last me a lifetime. Around 2k back then but as I said, a lifetime purchase.

Good to know. I will be shopping around. This was at Men's Wearhouse FWIW. Do they have a reputation for being expensive?

They're all black. It's not a suit

Like I said, if you're fine wearing the same one to every event you attend them it's probably smart to buy one. I am not.
Eta: and a tuxedo by definition is a formal suit

Not sure on the men's wearhouse. The times I've had to rent for weddings it was always a local place. The one in my hometown, if you had more than 4-5 groomsmen they gave the groom the rental for free. Shop around. Or call around. They can be had much cheaper.

If you have to wear more than once a year, buy.

Damn dude! I get a formal one with tails and gloves every now and then for a special event and I think it's only $140.

Jesus. I have to get a tux soon and I would be pissed if my buddy chose $250 tuxes for his wedding. Especially when we could spend a $100 more and get a brand new suit we could keep.

Wouldn't buy. Knowing my luck the week I get one the lapel goes out of style
