How many times do you need to wear a Tux to make it reasonable to buy versus renting?

I haven't rented one in years and have no idea of the rates.

If you're wearing it to formal events more than once a year or so buy a nice one and have it tailored. It will look much better than a rental. No point in owning one for stuff like weddings. Everyone will have to wear the same one then and if you're not in the wedding party a suit is just fine.

I would think if you're not wearing it at least 1-2 times annually, it's a waste to buy.

I bought one a decade ago. Only time I ever really wear one is the Endymion ball

Once a year, I'd buy for sure.

Seems to me like you answered your own question. If you don't use one often, why bother buying one, especially if it's years in between and there's a chance at your size changing a little.

I wear one probably 3-4 times a year but I rent because I don't want to wear the same one to every event

That's another good reason to rent one.

Of course, all these wannabe ballers on the OT will say buy one or you're cheap.

I started going to at least two events a year so I bought one. Wish I would have done it. Few years earlier

Not me, I just like to feel like I'm not wearing my brothers hand me downs again.
The fit is everything.

Valid point and I should have been more specific. I am involved in some Mardi Gras functions that will have me wearing one at least twice in the next six weeks. I was wondering if two rentals would put me most of the way towards buying one.

The fit thing is the other aspect. I would prefer to look nice and have never quite gotten a rental that wasn't hanging off of me.

Well some rental places are much better than others, so take that into consideration too. I say if you know you will need one once a year, go buy a good one.

Don't be a wanna be. Buy it if you can get it tailored in time.
You might find you accept more invites in the future that require them.
Good luck and have fun.

Along these lines, what is an acceptable price for groomsmen to pay to rent a Tux? Getting married soon and the Tuxedo that I have picked out is gonna run the groomsmen around $250. I am contemplating tossing $100 toward each of theirs to bring their OOP expense to $150. Is this necessary? It's been years since I've rented one.

I would tell you that you are out of your mind and if you want me in the wedding you better pick a cheaper one

Think I paid $95 last week
