Truly is a shame Baton Rouge did with the “silent sentinel” monument

I for one think they should have let the statue stand where it had stood for decades. As a descendent of the member of the st. James rifles, it is a disgrace what this state has done to honor its vets. Just like in New Orleans, removing the confederate monument had done nothing to slow down violent crime in BR.

I applaud them for not just tossing it in the trash just like Nola did with their monuments but the silent sentinel deserves more than being shuttered away in a dark corner of the state capital

Used stand proudly on the largest granite/marble pedestal of its time in front of the old state capital

New Orleans violent crime has been tumbling since the statues have come down.

The two events are completely unrelated, but you tried to relate them and you are wrong.

Cool pic of the old state Capitol with the cylindrical parapets on top.

If your grandpappy wanted a statue I guess he should've won.

I looked at the picture and couldn't place them. I am sure I have seen a picture with them, but honestly the first time they ever stood out to me.

They are just for show. Mark Twain once remarked that the La. state capitol was the ugliest building on the Mississippi. There was a fire there in his day and he said “ a wrecking ball could finish what that charitable fire has begun.”

Also, just an FYI, Stonewall Jackson’s last words were “ We shall cross over the river and rest in the shade of the trees”, which is the quote on the plaque.

Should put a MLK statue in its place, laughing at women getting raped.

I’m glad you carefully have considered others’ opinions and perspectives on it before you posted.

I can tell from how you specifically spoke to their potential positions that you have really invested a lot of energy in trying to see this issue from every possible angle.

I would have no problem if they put a statue up of an old black man paying the blues or a dapper AA playing the trumpet right next to it

You "I wish the South would have won" people are getting tiresome with your tears over monuments put up during the racist Jim Crow era by white supremacists.

What happened to those? When and why were they taken down?

ETA: I see someone beat me to this question but if someone else knows, I'd love to hear it.

I remember going to Christmas parades downtown Baton Rouge probably 1958-59 and we watched from the area around the statue.

So, I’m now determined to figure out what the hell happened to those turrets.

The photo of the Sentinel is undated, but the statue was placed on the pedestal in 1890, so it must be taken after that. This likely blows my original theory, which was that the turrets were abandoned when the Capitol was rebuilt in 1882.

I’m going to keep looking, but if anyone knows the answer, feel free.

Found it. Towers were removed due to structural issues after the 1906 fire. I’ll post source when I’m not on my phone.
