Had a discussion recently with someone who argued the most of the people who grow up in cities are better educated and have more opportunities, so they do not join the military.

Hmm..that's interesting since many those "better educated " kids would not make it in the military for a variety of reasons.

The one thing i saw when i was in the USMC is that a crap load of guys and girls come from pretty poor upbringings and pretty trashy backgrounds.

Doesn’t make them horrible people cause holy crap, we had some damn good times during those 4 years.

But the truth simply was that most everyone i was with in the different units i was in, was not from upper middle class or wealthy.

Several guys had family moms that thought they were living like royalty because they could buy a vehicle and didn’t have holes in the floorboards of their houses

That argument that the dumb join the military hasn’t been valid since Vietnam.

pretty dumb statement, VN was conscripted, and considered to be the most intelligent US fighting force in our history

nothing wrong with kids of lower class and even poor families wanting to take advantage of an opportunity to do something honorable and something they can be proud of. (And access to a good job and benefits)

Pride is something wealthy upper class seem to have an abundance of and take for granted.

Except for the guys that go to West Point and Annapolis.

Unless they’re dumb and poor as well.

Most who join do so because it’s a great opportunity for their education and life experience and others purely because tradition. Who cares where you hail from.

Idk about financial status but the idea military people are dumb is a huge misnomer. I scored in the mid nineties on the asvab, got a 20,000 signing bonus, and had my entire undergrad paid for using post 9/11 all for serving from 17-21. I’m 28 now with my only debt graduate school loans and that signing bonus paid for some of that so my loans aren’t much at all. I guess if you think that’s stupid then yeah, we’re idiots

I have served with the people of every race, from every region, and all walks of life. I went through training with a soilder who's parents tried to bribe them with a brand new car, place to live, and pay for all college tuition along with a monthly allowance for them not to join ,but they wanted to make their own path and not rely on their parents who were well off. Served with guys who came out the hood or the farm who came from dirt poor families. I would say more people on the enlisted side come from the middle or lower middle class ,but that is not always the case.

Our son grew up in a fairly rural area, well educated family, maybe upper middle class. Wasn't going to be typical college kid. USAF was an opportunity, took it, rest is history

Seemed like everyone in my platoon from boot was from Louisiana, Ohio, new York , and florida. Im sure they cycle through states though and thats only half the country for parris island.

Half my Flight in Basic was from Louisiana and Mississippi. When I was in active duty, most people I worked with were from Louisiana, Texas, Ohio, and throughout the south. I believe we had 1 from Cali, Hawaii, and Arizona.
