I have 6 states left to drive through. We have top five best roads.
15 years ago, yeah, we sucked. But we have maintained while others did nothing.
Worst roads? Colorado or alabama.

Almost assuredly false, and even if true, we have a huge disadvantage.
Everyone makes a big shite about how much better roads are in Texas, but the surface streets in Houston are terrible. It was explained to me by a supposed CE grad from Rice that it has a lot to do with the soil content being really poor for building a road. I realized that this is a major reason why our roads are often subpar, in addition to how many trees we have. The opposite holds true in Germany. I noticed how impeccable their roads are, and it was explained to me that the topography and weather are absolutely perfect (with a ton of infrastructure spending directed to it)
For the highways, and I'm certainly by no means an expert, but I figure that a lot of that has to do with allocation of federal highway funding. Probably has to do with population.
The major thing we should all be concerned about IMO is how much we litter as a state. To me, that is beyond unacceptable.

I hate to see LA waste so much money on asphalt roads. Concrete roads last 3 times as long. Seems like such a waste. This is one of the biggest differences you will notice from Texas to La.

Winters wreck certain roads/highways in Jersey. The salt makes them break up, coupled with the plows. Near Newark airport last winter there were many cars pulled to the side with flats after hitting pot holes.

Not necessarily the roads themselves, but the infrastructure is horrendous. And not a single g damn light is synchronized on any of the major roadways.

Not sure if valid but I was told our fuel tax dollars do not go to roads but to the dotd. Our direct find for road construction is from the federal tax. Our roads are thus severely underfunded. DOTD is enormous and eats up all the state gas revenue.b

And the DOTD still can't manage to keep the grass cut. They do it maybe 3 times a year, will run the mowers over trash and shred it to a million pieces, and forget weed eating the uncut parts.

It definitely used to be true. Now, I'm not sure because Louisiana roads have improved in recent years.

New Orleans has a lot of busted roads, and Baton Rouge has outgrown their highway network completely. Actually Baton Rouge roads are mostly smooth, but they are functionally obsolete to the point where they should have been widened or expanded decades ago
Pennsylvania roads are both functionally obsolete and destroyed every winter with reparative freeze/thaw cycles, plows, and a shite load of salt. The tunnels can't be widened at all and are a constant headache at rush hour.
A lot of the steel trusses on the bridges are rusting out because of the winter salt used to melt the ice. Cars here last maybe 6-7 years before they need body work because of the corrosion. Pickup trucks seem to rust out especially quickly because of all the underbody nooks and crevices that collect snow and salt spray.
I'm going with New Jersey or PA for worst roads in the nation. Louisiana is up there though.
