The natural landscape is altered with the construction, thus causing rain to pool in places that it naturally wouldn't.

Correct.

Also, every new subdivision and shopping center replaces ground that used to absorb water.

Every new subdivision or shopping center has to detain to pre development levels.

Yep and we should be replacing regular cement with porous cement that will allow draining right to the soil . Jefferson Parish is like 80 cement and it makes drainage harder to move the water.

Well, I guess I am going to get to experience this flooding everyone talks about here. THe floods all have names. Tax Day flood. Harvey, Memorial Day, etc....

I wasn't here for any of them but they seem to be pretty notable events. This could really suck for a few days.

I get that part but the 30+ " rainfall totals aren't normal.

There's a climate element that few will be willing to acknowledge but it's more of a multiplier than a direct cause. Just gooses the rainfall rates a little.

We've had a lot of cases recently where steering falls apart when storms are coming in. Probably a function of all the tropical systems getting into the gulf in recent years, a few of em are going to stall. The big flood events have almost all been tropical (and August 2016 was warm cored and doing efficient warm rainmaking like a tropical cyclone).

You combine with that development turning areas with soil into concrete that just runs off, and you get more floods.

You know, assuming there isn't some fundamental flaw in the porous concrete I don't know about since I'm not a concrete doctor.

For sure.

I read Rummel’s post as if he meant an entire region and not neighborhoods/suburbs.

Every project in the Louisiana coastal zone that has destroys a an acre of wetland has to mitigate on site or elsewhere through mitigation banks.

If you find where we put those replacement wetlands please let us know.

Yeah, there are some detention projects planned for the area, but they haven't happened yet. Thankfully there is a good portion of the property outside the floodplain that I plan to build on. I'm eventually going to put some tree house short term rentals down in the floodplain.

I don’t post really ever, but This is super important to me. I am bringing my husband, who has terminal brain cancer to MD Anderson for his monthly check up tomorrow and his appointments are Tuesday. Do y’all think we should reschedule? I don’t want to get stuck in Houston with the rain.

Would it be too difficult to mover to the end of the week or next week? If not, then maybe that would be a better idea - especially with the Space City Weather guys being bullish on flooding.

Prayers to you and your husband.

Rummy's right, I wouldn't be looking to go to Houston early this week unless you really need to. Not being a doctor though, couldn't really say what you should do.

Also where are you coming from?
