You don't understand how much this one sprayed. A pad would not have helped. Maybe a tarp but not a pad.

I've seen similar a few times with hollow oaks. The hollow in the middle being filled with water.

Wait. So you guys think that somehow a tree root punctured a water line. That root is hollow like a pipe, thus making the tree a plumbing fixture?
The reality is much more simple. Trees are often hollow in the middle. Any opening in the tree like a knot hole can funnel rain water into the trees hollow cavity.
