Tree removal: Is it possible to keep the wood?

What’s the protocol for tree removal companies. Do they let you keep the wood for personal use?
Or do they have a strict “we get it and get to sell it” policy.
River birch is the tree I’m looking to get taken down.

I am sure they will be happy to let you keep it. They can’t sell it for more than it cost to move it.

I worked for a tree company doing sales at one point and they hauled all the wood away and had a giant burn pile. Not sure if anyone ever asked to keep it but I'm sure they'd let you keep some if you asked.
Then you might be left with 500lb pieces of trunk in your yard, because I dont know if they would cut it up to your preferred size

I see it by the road after they finish. So, I would guess there is no blanket policy. Just ask the company. Probably less they have to spend on taking it to landfill anyway if they do take it away.

They’ll be more than happy to let you deal with it.

Mine will be cut down and left for me to cut up. They will still grind the stumps. This cheapened the price significantly as I didn’t have to pay for their crane and other equipment to haul the wood away.

It should cost less for them to leave it than to remove it. They don’t have to pay their guys to haul it away.

I know some guys will go cut and haul certain trees for free for just the wood. They’ll cut it up for firewood
Other times they would rather not haul it to their trash pile. That’s a pita for them

They wouldn’t exactly be removing the tree. They’d be tree cutters. And you would have to chop up the wood for your personal use. You can keep it, though. They don’t sell the wood for pulp, firewood or woodworking.

They were more than happy to leave the gigantic pile of mulch after grinding my river birch stump.
I wasn’t too happy, but they were.

They’ll leave it for you. If they bring moving equipment to their jobs, you may want to be specific about where you want them to leave it. Had some baws leave a tree once and didn’t think to tell them where. They left it where they put it down in my front yard. Wife was pissed and I ended up hauling this big arse hickory piece by piece to the back.

Place I had in Houston cut down my tree let me keep it. Sliced off a section of the trunk for me to use and took the rest away. Didn’t change the price.
Doubt there is a huge market for river birch. May be different story if pine or oak.

You definitely can. Ask that they cut it into manageable pieces and don’t leave you with 30’ sections of trunk.

Is oak on the list?
I have one that I am ready to part with.
It blocks way too much sun and the ground is bare and it is starting to get near power lines.
I also have a pecan tree that needs to go. It makes the smallest pecans known to man.
Every year it gets eaten bare by insects and the squirrels take all my pecans.
