Just call the Insurance agency and get them to confirm coverage for that person. Or not.

Make sure he hauls all the lumber away

quote:After he sends the picture, call the insurance agent or company listed on there to verify coverage and make sure he’s insured for type of work you’re hiring him to do. Contractors have to disclose the type(s) of work they do when applying general liability policies for them to be covered for that specific type of work.
He said he will be sending picture of his insurance to me when he gets home. Should I trust it?
For example, if you hire a guy who has insurance but if his contractor GL policy only has him listed for drywall and painting, but he does some electrical work for you that ends up causing a fire, his policy will deny coverage because he wasn’t rated for electrical work.
If he doesn’t have insurance, you’re taking a huge risk if you hire him anyway because your homeowners policy isn’t going to cover damage caused by someone you hired fricking up. Leaving you screwed if he drops one of those trees on your house or someone gets hurt.

I did ask. He claims he will be sending me a picture. I have a suspicion it’ll be phony.

Can’t you just ask for proof of insurance? Is this that difficult?

You need to at least get a grown up to come quote it first. I use Feliciana Tree Service out of Slaughter area.

My most excellent Entergy Mexican swings by every 2-3 years and takes care of my trees. No complaints.

Let me tell you a story.
I had a gentleman and his associate approach me in my driveway and let me know that oak next to my driveway was dead. These esteemed gentleman in their 95 Chevy S10 were correct.
Against my better judgement, I asked how much they would charge to take it down and haul it off and 700 bucks was the answer. Understanding this fellow in his Sammy's T-shirt (the souths finest show girls) probably didn't have insurance I told him to go nuts. After all, the tree couldn't hit my house or my neighbors, only my fence.
Well they cut down a 30' oak tree and loaded the entire damn thing in the back of that S10. Cleaned up so well I called them back and had them do a pine tree in my yard the next week. Also couldn't hit anything.
Fast forward a month and my buddy is looking for cheap tree work, I let him know about Mr Sammy's and that he was likely not insured. He reluctantly decided to try it out.
On the day of the tree work, he is headed home from work. Street lined with firetrucks, policeman, and Alabama power. Mr Sammy's had dropped a tree on a power line, knocking down a transformer and setting fire to 6 of his neighbor's yards.
Mr Sammy's did not have insurance, it did not go well for him or Alabama power.

He obviously does not have insurance. If he falls out of the tree or the tree falls on someone else, you’re going to be sued.
If he doesn’t have workman’s comp and his guy gets injured then you are at risk. There are numerous reasons for people doing work on your property to have insurance.

Do you all to see insurance ? Even from a reputable company ?
Most reputable companies include a copy of the insurance with the estimate.

Do you trust someone unlicensed and not an arborist to do shite like this over the top of your house?
No, shouldn’t.
I’d hire me but I’m in Bend.
Tons of licensed, insured tree companies in BTR with legitimate arborists on staff.
Those three trees, depending on how close they are to your house and what access there is to process material, are worth anywhere from 3K to 9K.

I had a big live oak cut down a few years ago. It was just too close to the house. I accepted one of the more expensive quotes because I knew they had insurance and were reputable.

Don’t accept a certificate of insurance from insured. Tell him agent needs to email you a copy with you listed as certificate holder.
I’d even ask agent to put tree removal in description of ops box if his insured name isn’t obvious.
Work comp too, it doesn’t fricking matter if he don’t got no employees.

Call his agent personally and have them send you everything, Most importantly name you as the loss payee! Too many insurance companies do not know who to pay in the event of a loss so they don’t pay anyone and it ens up in court.

Would your homeowners pay a claim if something happened to your house? Or an injury to a worker? And you be forced to pay deductible? Or you would be SOL for everything?
