I'll be flying with my golf clubs for the first time this week. Is it safe to fly with my clubs in my cart bag and just the rain hood over them or should I get a travel bag for them? I don't travel a whole lot, so I don't want to spend the money on a travel bag if it isn't necessary. I'm flying delta if anyone has ever flown with them with golf clubs.

I know people who do, but travel bags are less than replacing a driver so get a travel bag.

I always haul mine in a travel bag 15-20 trips a year.

No. Get a travel bag. Delta will cover damages to clubs if they're in a hard sided bag. They'll take a soft sided bag but will not cover damages.

I use a soft sided bag that's padded at the top where my club heads rest. They fly with me about 12-15 times a year. No issues.

You can also ship using one of several services specializing in golf clubs. Never used ship sticks but they advertise heavily.

If you fly would go with a hard bag.

The only advantage to shipping is not lugging your clubs through the airport. Otherwise it's neither economical or practical as you have to ship them out ahead of time and don't get them back until later. And for the same cost you could have bought a decent travel bag.

Same here. The only problem I've found is that sometimes the baggage guys grab the external, adjustable tightening straps and they'll loosen up causing my bag to wiggle a little inside the travel bag. Never had any issues from it though.

The problem with hard sided cases is that many of them won't fit in a standard rental car.

You definitely can travel with just the bag cover. Wrap several towels around your irons and woods so that they don't rattle and bang. Now it is obviously better to have a padded travel bag but will do for trip.

Am I the only person in the world scared of a flight losing my clubs? That's the reason I FedEx them to where I'm going.

I'd say the risk of FedEx losing them is greater. They'll touch more hands than the airline.

I've had luggage lost twice now. After the first I went and bought a bright yellow suitcase thinking for some reason it would be better. Guess what happened the first trip out west with the yellow suitcase? Yea...

They've not been lost with FedEx yet...so I'll keep going that route.

Got this for $100 at Golfsmith. Have traveled several times and never had an issue:

My clubs were delayed the last FOUR times I traveled with them. Allegedly, they need extra time to load oversized items and the cutoff is much sooner than an hour before your flight.

I use a soft sides bag and haven't had any trouble. Or you could rent clubs wherever you're playing.
