Its a multi billon dollar industry in which half the teams are coached by people who might have been on the team but didn't excel at sports in HS. Or someone who made the all star team in rec ball, and then quit baseball in the middle of their freshman year so now they are living through their kids.
na most of the teams are dad coached. the majority of the ones not are coached by people that played in college and their full time job is an academy of some kind and coaching the team. but in general in this state....nobody is getting rich off this. exception may be the traction people.

I’ve wondered why is travel baseball so big but you don’t see the same stuff for basketball or football.
You’d think a 7 on 7 summer travel football league would be popular. Make Jaxson the next QB star
Basketball has AAU which is just as big and just as bad as travel basebal
LOL if you don't think 7on7 is getting to be the same and AAU basketball, "elite" soccer and competitive cheer are worse = softball and baseball about the same.... a rapidly growing thing is flag football tourneys.
every competitive youth endeavor has jumped the shark

Your responses in this thread seem to suggest that making the HS baseball team is the most important thing in life
not even close and i dont see how you could take that from my repsonses. i dont want to make the decision for him, he should be the one to make it. my kids could quit tomorrow and want to do something else...i dont care.

if your putting a sizable portion of your disposable income in travel ball
yea ok. yea that 2k plus 8-10 weeknds out of town is just killing me
or how about im a successful adult and can afford it with no problem.
quote:
your spending habits suggest it is of most importance
yea thats it. its cool if you cant afford it but you should stop making assumptions about others income levels and frankly not worry about how others spend their money.

those travel ball kids are also lifting weights, many times starting in elementary school, taking private pitching and hitting lessons and many times fielding lessons and sometimes more than one a week, hitting 3+ buckets a day at home 300+ days a year, doign long toss and bat speed programs by themselves at home on their time.

Lol, riding behind a family with a Mandeville soccer club sticker…must have been in Foley. I do not miss those tournaments…but kids need a base to build on.
All that said, kids can actually make money playing college ball. Never even contemplated that when my boy was growing up…now, every offer comes with straight money, in addition to school/room/food…
$47.5k/yr from one school in his top 3. That’s just nuts.

i dont even care about college and i dont ever really hear it brought up in the travel ball circles. its more about getting prepared for high school both academically and athletically.
and everyone makes fun of travel ball but for example, the coach on my sons team...they pray before and after games and practices, they have to bring their report cards(make a C and you are running after practice, Ds require even more runnign, F......yea you are sitting until you bring it up) and he essentially sets a standard for all things, either you are meeting it or you arent and if you arent...he lets them know. he doesnt tell the parents the uniforms or practices times, he tell the kids and tells them to be resposnsible. show up to practice out of uniform...you run. He has been like this since they were 8 and personally i think its great for the kids.
travel baseball isnt for everyone. competitive sports arent for everyone. just like making a 4.0 in hs and going to college isnt for everyone. thats ok.
but damn the OT screams about kids sitting around and playing video games and getting fat....but at the same time...decide to play a sport at a high level....yea thats too much. god forbid anythign interfere with the great louisiana hobby of drinking beer at the camp every weekend. god forbid.

My nephew made the all star rec team which became a travel team in which they played in 5 tournament, one every week for 5 weeks.
No bullshite. They played in a tournament that only had 4 teams and they got rings for finishing 2nd.
His coach was a grandpa of someone on the team. The coach would leave the dugout between innings to go smoke.
The brilliant thing about this guy was that at practice no one practiced at a certain position. He would just tell them to take a position. So whoever got to the position they wanted to play first practiced there. He had one lineup he went with each week.
Evidently the right fielder wanted to play first base, he would get there first for every practice, but when they played game he was put in right. So the 1st baseman never practiced at first base.
And somehow they were able to get rings for coming out 2nd place in a tournament.
On Saturdays each team plays twice and they use the results of the tournaments, runs scored - runs given up to come up with the seeding. Teams that lose on Sunday are out, the team that wins the tournament has to win 3 straight games.
Its all a money grab. There are travel teams made up of the best players in a certain region and some of them are teams made up of kids who couldn't make another travel team. And every team seems like they have at least one parent who acts like a complete arse.
I honestly think half the parents out there truly believes their kid is getting a scholarship to play at LSU.

Travel ball jokes are not aimed at the kids. The jokes are aimed at the overall douchebaggery of the travel ball parents.
Get it?

so your nephew went and played in a very low level aa tournament, prolly USSSA or OTC bullshite and now you think thats how travel ball is right?
how about this....next year when PG is having the Super NIT in BR or 2D is hosting a huge Select Series tournament you go out and watch the majors division in the PG event or the SS event and come back and tell us if you still have the same opinion.
in other words your little experience with your nephew is not close to how 99% of travel teams are in this state especially once you get to AAA and majors ball.

Pretty easy to spot the unathletic losers in this thread.

When my son played soccer it was difficult to find top level teams…we played BRSC, LA Fire, MSC and MS Rush so many damn times I probably still recognize those kids.

horseshite. My kid plays travel soccer. There is a noticeable and obvious difference between travel baseball parents and travel soccer parents.

We at least knew what side of the field to sit on.
ETA: have them kick footballs
