this is interesting. Golf and tennis are the two sports I think my daughter would be a good fit for. Maybe the ultra competitiveness of the usual sports is driving people away.
I’m thinking it’s more of a Covid effect (at least the drop in team sports and rise in individual sports). Golf and tennis was wide open during the pandemic. Easy to go to the range and hit balls.

Thunderbolts are the exception, not the rule. My daughter is in 10u, plenty of competition around here in that age group. Bolts went 0-4 last tournament, right here in Hoover, by the way.
Well that’s why these arguments are dumb. There’s so many levels of travel ball to be grouped singularly in 1 category. I’m probably spending at least 10k a year w my daughter softball alone now w dues and travel etc, only going to go up more next couple years.

Working in Baton Rouge with a bunch of moms when the travel ball league (what was the name of it? Something dumb) came out with the team pickings.
It was so disgusting
First off it’s little kids playing baseball
Your son isn’t going pro
And then they would gossip about how kids got picked for such team or left off etc etc
Like spending their entire day gossiping about little kids playing baseball like they were talking about an episode of the kardashians
VERY very bizarre to witness. Very bizarre.

Birmingham is a great hub for ball so you’re fortunate in that regard.

Tennis is a great sport. Can play with your wife or kids until you die. Plenty of tourney options / leagues too. Keeps in you in great shape

Looks like kids aren’t participating in anything anymore

You want to also discuss last years club volleyball costs then toss in my sons travel baseball too?

Is it still dumb if my daughter has an opportunity to play college ball somewhere? It’s not just financial implications, it’s life experiences.

Yes

How is it you can’t play rec if you aren’t in travel
Travel ball volunteer dads all coach the rec leagues to recruit so if you sign up for rec but aren’t interested in travel ball they either just ignore you and your kid or constantly harass you about it. It’s unbelievably stupid and pathetic. I had no idea just how sad it was until my kids were old enough to start rec sports.
It’s a symptom of hyper social media narcissism culture and the “I have to live my life through my child” culture Gen Xers are so oddly fond of.
Teenagers playing travel sports in highschool? Have fun. 8-9year olds playing year round travel sports? Insanity.

We have had girls on our teams with older siblings in travel cheer. 18-20k a year.
Thunderbolts played in an 8u world series in California. Birmingham is a mecca for travel ball already, why do they need to go to California? They aren't even the best team in central AL anymore
All that to say, some of these teams do it to themselves, so the parents do too. Drive to the next state to play 3 or 4 games and get sent home? Find something closer.
ETA: bolts are actually struggling with this right now. The studs don't have to go all over the place to play competitive ball. There's Gametime, SoCal, Mustangs, Red Storm, White Lightning, Vipers, etc. all right here. So they aren't getting the talent. They have been flying pitchers into tournaments to compete.

Flag football and soccer participation is up, tackle football and wrestling are down. Tells you everything you need to know about the direction of the country.

As a dad who son played travel baseball it’s what you make of it. We didn’t play every weekend, stayed somewhat local for most tournaments, and has several fundraisers to help with costs. He is now a junior in HS still playing ball and would have no shot without playing tournament ball. When he was young he played several different sports

What if I told you that they use tournaments to recruit other talents out there as well… you want your organization in these events. They’ll keep upping and replacing the talent as they get older but you always have good classes and not so good classes from an age year to age year basis.

There's too many teams in our area, the talent is spread out and they don't want to commit to the bolt type structure.
Most teams from other states come to AL to play.
