Everything on the list that is overdone with travel competitions and clubs is down, no surprise. They have taken the recreation out of it, it's all costs and work and no fun.

It's also an indictment on "specialization" culture and how it fragments society.

Youth sports used to be a community event with kids at different levels getting exposed to one another both on and off the field along with parents of different types of kids.

Now all the dads are ex-ball players.

yea im sure its that, even though participation was up from 2012-2019....somethign about 2020...cant put my finger on it.

also not to mention participation in travel is up

but please explain how travel ball effects league participation from others and how travel parents seeking high competition means they want to be quarantined off and separated from gen pop

oh and lastly please show me where the travel ball parent touched you

or just explain your experience with travel ball since you seem all knowing.

You really love this travel ball stuff huh?

To each his own.

We only allow or kids 45 minute max intervals on the iPad.
Anything more and they turn into zombies.

Its part of the reason we dont have more black ball players. They use to have more players when we did it community style. Now they all flocked to other sports.

Y'all act like these kids hate practicing and playing. My son loves it and wants to be a good player and teammate. He knows he's not going to be a major leaguer but wants to compete as long as he can. My wife and I will be sad when it comes to an end because we enjoy watching him play and have made some great friends along the way. But he is a straight A student taking honors classes so he will be alright after baseball.

This.......same with us. My kid is not one of the best players but loves the game and gets all a's in school. The teamwork he learns today will help him in life.

Your son has a touch of self-realization probably at the hands of his parents. Most of these kids do not.

Bravo on you though for your son realizing early this is primarily for fun.

now its to the point, in most places where the HS team is really good...you arent making the team without playing high level travel and every year you wait to get into higher level travel the further you fall behind unfortunately.

This is unfortunate. I hate that you can't play every sport growing up these days. Seems like kids are having to pick a sport to specialize in at an early age if they want to play in high school.

I've got a friend who had a successful MLB career and now coaches one of the better high school programs in TN. He says unless the kid is just a freak athlete, it's pretty hard to make varsity these days playing rec ball growing up. Just get so many more reps in travel ball.

This is simply completely untrue. Travel ball helps but its by no means everything. Everything is practicing and playing, a lot.

There are tons of poor white, black, and hispanic (and whatever else) that grow up in areas that either don't have travel ball teams or they are just too poor. Those kids make it all the time.

What travel ball does is help kids face better competition and more importantly, see better competition so they know how much they need to practice to be better individually. Every single year there are scholarship athletes at every SEC school that grew up not playing travel ball or at least not until they made varsity and were recruited by someone.

The current generation of parents have started to realize this. If your kid loves a sport, then it’s great that there is an opportunity for them to expand their skills, but far too many parents were trying to force their lost glory upon their children.

As annoying as these people seem at least they're involved. Much better outcome than the absent parents.

I think its also been proven that you're better off spending the money on weekly private lessons and practicing at home than playing travel baseball.

You can practice all you want at home, but you have to see live action. Hitting off a tee and throwing into a net isn't enough.
