Why would you ever want to listen to that?

I don't know if it's still on Netflix, but there was a really interesting documentary on AirFrance flight 447 that I watched probably 2 years ago. It was pretty crazy how much went wrong under a bizarre set of circumstances.

To learn from their mistakes. The more you practice and think about shite that could go wrong, the better prepared you will be. Goes with anything, not just flying.

This Popular Mechanics article is absolutely maddening to read regarding that flight.

Neither weather nor malfunction doomed AF447, nor a complex chain of error, but a simple but persistent mistake on the part of one of the pilots.

I think I watched that the other day on the Smithsonian Channel or something.

Was that the flight where the pilot's Pitot tubes were giving them false altitude readings and then there was this bizarre set of circumstances that made them climb, nose up, throttle up and somehow they stalled out?

1994 Fed Ex 705. A disgruntled employee attacks the pilots with a hammer soon after taking off. Crazy stuff.

They fought him off. Didn't crash, but they flew inverted for a while and pushed that jet pretty hard to keep that attacker off balance.

That wasn't 447. You're thinking of Birgenair 301 out of the Dominican Republic, the one where the suspect was a wasp that decided an uncovered pitot tube would make for a good home.

frick wasps.

If I were a pilot and a wasp had made into the cockpit, that would be a shameful piece of audio for the NTSB to dissect.

it's been a while since I've looked at that transcript, don't think they were ever inverted but they did roll in about 110 degrees of bank a couple of times to try to get the guy off balance, also, at one time, for almost 7 minutes, iirc, all three pilots were out of their seats fighting with this guy with the autopilot off, and the plane in a shallow descending turn below 7000 feet, they came real close to losing that aircraft

I partied with those flight attendants the night before that crash, they had been at our hotel for almost a month

I read the article that was referenced.

Pilot error is said a lot, but in this case, I think it fits.

Alaska Air flight 261 would have been an awful way to go. Those people had a long time to know they were going to die.

My Uncle, Aunt, and cousin were on American Flight 1420 in Little Rock in 1999, all three of them survived. Pretty crazy to hear them talk about it. I like flying with them because I figure the chances they'll get in two major plane crashes is pretty slim

the Captain of that flight, had he survived, should have been charged with murder, but instead they've got his picture hanging on the wall up in Chicago like he was some sort of hero

I was flying Alaska Air several times a month when that happened. I'm not a nervous flyer, but I stopped booking flights using MD-80s for about two years after that incident.
