re: Trans man unhappy with maternity care

This is where the article really lost me, though:
quote:
Davis Chandler, 38, a parent of two who identifies as trans and nonbinary
How can a person be trans, as in someone who has gone through some form of gender transition, yet identify as neither male or female? If you don’t see yourself as either, what is there to transition to/from?
Or does being non-binary necessitate some form of transition in and of itself?
quote:
And yet, it is possible for trans men to have kids, he said. Say someone lapses while taking testosterone and their period returns; they could get pregnant, perhaps unintentionally.
So we would have to be talking about biological females with no current testosterone supplementation, essentially normalized levels of female hormones, and essentially normal female anatomy who are having PIV sex with functional biological males.
Fine. But what aspect of this scenario suggests that these individuals’ behaviors are occurring under the influence of a brain that is indisputably and measurably male, and not one that is more consistent with their sex at birth? (Clothing and hairstyles? Hobbies? I’m seriously trying to think this through.)
Taking it a step further, to what extent is the rest of the world obligated to profess that these individuals are definitely not women, in spite of the fact that such an outcome would be overwhelmingly predicated on biological processes and behaviors that conform to traditional female norms?
Not trying to be an arse. I just genuinely do not understand these lines of reasoning, and this story doesn’t really help to elucidate them in any way.

isn’t that just validating the concept that some traits really are inherently and immutably “male” or “female”?
Somewhere out there on an exoplanet far, far away, a civilization of aliens lives who don’t have this problem. Each of them has both sexes. That was one of the options evolution presented to earth’s creatures. Only worms and a select few other species became bisexual.
Sexual dimorphism proved to be more efficient for rapidly increasing species’ populations. So it became the standard method of reproduction. But imagine a world where each human had the capacity to both impregnate and be impregnated. There would be no he or she. Just 8 billion its overpopulating the earth.

So, apparently this person used to be ‘female but has now become a male. As a male, he then chooses to perform the most feminine role on earth—giving birth.
No, she is still a female. This whole discourse on "male and female are gender roles created by society" is complete bullshite. "Male" and "female" have always been used first and foremost to describe the biological male and female, the societal roles were always secondary. It wasn't until the 20th century that some thumb-twiddling nitwit with far too much time on his hands became so blinded by his desire to segregate sex and gender he refused to see the harm he was doing. (see: David Reimer)
quote:
I don’t understand this at all. If he truly wants to be male, why then choose to do something that only females do? If parenthood is the goal, why not adopt or use a female surrogate?
SHE isn't a male and never will be. SHE will always be a female. It's one thing to feel more masculine or effeminate, it's another to attempt to delude oneself into thinking their biology is something altogether different. It's yet a whole other thing altogether to then demand others join in their delusion.

Like I asked another poster...when giving hormones and transition surgery IS the help and treatment that is being recommended by psychiatrists then what do you expect to happen?
If I was a patient and was told I had cancer and was going to die, I'd get a second opinion. I would think I'd do the same if some doctor told me to delete my wiener.
Mutilation is hardly a cure, it's going to treat a symptom, but the underlying mess is still there. Intense therapy and medication may help, but irreversible surgery is just malpractice.

It’s amazing to me that here in the 21st century there isn’t intense research into correcting the congenital brain defect that causes gender dysphoria. I’m positive that most people who experience it would choose brain surgery (or chemical alteration) over the mind boggling physical surgeries that are used today.
From the examples that I’ve studied, physical transformations are exceedingly painful, unreliable and expensive, so much so that the vast majority of transgenders opt not to undergo the surgeries. Why this subject is not a popular research project at medical colleges, especially, is bewildering.

It means born with a vagina. This trans man was born female but had her breasts cut off. S/he took hormones to grow a beard.
So she is female... Cause according to "science" her chromosomes say she is XX which is female. No matter how many surgeries and hormones she takes she is sill FEMALE.
Why cant she just accept that she likes to dress like a dude but is realistically a female.

Pursuing this as an option would definitely be more helpful than the current practices. Fix the root of the problem—not the external appearance.

I hear different things from different sources. Some say the process for getting on puberty blockers or hormones is lengthy and involves years of therapy to insure its the right course of action. Others have said its much less time and thats something I have a problem with especially young people.
Dealing with mental health is not perfect. I have a sibling that suffers from mental illness and my parents went bankrupt during the 80's trying to "cure" her. She has had every form of treatment imaginable and she is still very much a sick person. There are those that go through transition that lead happy healthy lives particularly those get support from family and peers. Others still suffer depression and in some cases suicide. This is often the case when they are rejected by their family. That is not to assign any guilt to your position but it may be something to consider.

There's probably a reason for that but I'm not an obstetrician so I'll have to wait for a doctor to clarify the issue.

The children, can we still call them children? of that person before they were born were in a body whose hormones had been messed with, big time. How did that affect the child's prenatal development?

I haven’t read the replies yet, I went straight to the article and this quote jumped out at me:
So carrying a child is ok and wouldn’t cause gender dysphoria, but the vaginal delivery is crossing the line?! You don’t get to pick and choose! You want to be female and carry a child, then do the dang thing. Don’t schedule a major surgical procedure that MOST doctors agree shouldn’t be performed unless absolutely necessary because a vaginal delivery is just too female for you. I’m so sick of this.
quote:
whether a vaginal delivery would create extreme gender dysphoria for the patient.

God, how boring and lonely would life be? No sex with other people? That is just sad to think about.

I have to disagree here. S/he WAS a female. Even though s/he has XX chromosomes and a vagina, s/he has altered his/her body too much to still be a female.
This person appears to be a male, yet this person is not a male (still XX and has a vagina). This person is neither female nor male. There is absolutely no way that a straight male would EVER look at this person as a female. That photo of this pregnant “male” is abhorrent because it depicts something so fundamentally wrong. Men don’t get pregnant. S/he certainly doesn’t look like a pregnant woman.

No, she's still a female. Don't buy into the rhetorical bullshite about "societal constructs". I can put lipstick and a dress on a pig but it's still a pig.

This is a woman who underwent physical disfigurement to further her delusional wish fulfillment. This is a mental disorder as evidenced by her demand of others to participate in her denial of her biological reality as well as her inability to reconcile the duality of her desire to convince herself that she's not a female with the very real fact that she's pregnant, has a vagina and can have a vaginal birth.
Her voluntary disfigurement nor her denial of reality change the fact that she's a female. Changing the pronouns used to refer to her do not change this, her lying to people does not change this, her taking hormones to promote muscle mass and hair growth does not change this.
And it never will.
Mental issues are mental issues. Normalizing them does not make the person suffering from them better, it just enables them to act ever more extreme.
