A lot of people want to say things about the railroad engineers and conductors when it comes to accidents when things happen that quickly...trains just don't stop, they can't "tap" their brakes if someone pulls out in front of them..now those employees have to live with that scene branded in their memory..they are the first ones to check out the scene to see those deaths..I haven't experienced this and I hope I never have to..but one thing I was told when i hired on, it's not if it happens but when it happens..
Truth.

I know what your saying..I could only imagine right now the impact it has just from talking to my co-workers who have experienced this.

I bet that driver won't do that again.

No but they do watch them launch which is understandable.

Trains are undefeated

same with airports. There used to be a set of bleachers at the PDK airport in Atlanta just for people to sit and watch the planes come/go. I was always surprised by how many people would go sit in those bleachers with scanners and listen to the transmissions between the tower/planes. I guess working there, I took the experience for granted.
Probably quit letting the public do that after 9/11 though.

I don't work for the railroad but I do work with them. Some of the stories those guys tell... people are dumb.
Here's a good one from a couple of years ago in Baton Rouge: KCS train almost hits car
Pretty much every one of the guys on the crew that runs out my way has been involved in a collision. It happens quite a bit between BR and Hammond.

See! Trains CAN stop!!!

I'd be willing to bet that was just a locomotive or it was only carrying a few cars. A fully loaded train doesn't stop like that.

The train nerds (of which I am sort of one) were too close to the tracks. Pipes and other loads occasionally work loose and swing out - the kid in the first video should have been outside, not inside, of the signals.
I wonder how much of a distraction they were to the driver (although normally cars start looking around for trains when they see you out there).

fricking balls on that guy. Did they really stay in the car with a train barreling down on them?

Great find.
The sad thing is that the driver was probably completely unaware he'd been so close to death. If the engineer had applied the brakes only one second later that would have been it.
ETA: And even more amazingly, the car didn't immediately whip into reverse and GTFO of there with the quickness. No, the driver actually stayed put.

That isn't balls. That's just being fricking stupid. Darwin will get them sooner or later.

I guess I need to rephrase what I said about they can't just stop..yes they can stop..if they have enough warning they can stop if it's far enough ahead or the load is light..we almost hit a guy on a backhoe in dville 2 weeks ago trying to fix his farmer crossing to his cane field..the guy that was helping him was standing in between the rail and we were honking and the guy just turns and waves like we hear ya, we're almost done just a minute...came about 30ft from plowing him into the backhoe..lucky we saw him in the amount of time we did...didn't let anyone with the railroad know he was there which we have maintenance guys who work on crossings and set up things where we aren't allowed in their area for safety purposes.

frick train crossings, I always slow wayyy down on small crossings like that and look to make sure that no train is coming. I drive like an a-hole 99% of the time but I don't mess with train tracks. The train wins every single time. All it takes is some faulty crossing equipment (gates, sirens, lights) and you're toast.
