For those of you local to the area, is there typically a lot of traffic on I-10 from Lafayette to Breaux Bridge (and vice versa)?

I've been through that area a fair number of times over last 5-6 years, and I can't recall a single time, short of an accident, where there was any real traffic backup. At any hour of the day or night.

Yet, we (the feds and the state) are adding a third lane in that area.

Aren't there other areas of the state road system that need work before this is done?

Or, is this a legit traffic area and this work is justified?

I take that route maybe 18 times a year. Maybe I'm just lucky. That's why I was asking.

I’ve never had traffic there ever and think federal dollars should be spent on true bottlenecks like the MS River Bride 10/110 merger or I-10 in Prairieville, although it my opinion that traffic will always suck there because of the number of people exiting onto 2 lane roads of 73 and 44.

I-12 on the north shore right around Covington is also bad and of course I-10 in LC has the Ramp of a bridge that stalls out an 18 wheeler weekly.

I will say though that Lafayette has some traffic during the peak hours, but who doesn’t.

I think you're missing the stupidest part of this issue. They are going to widen it to 3 lanes, and then create a bottleneck at the Atchafalaya Basin bridge when it goes back down to 2.

I've seen several backups on the westbound side around Breaux Bridge in the last few months.

they are going all the way to the basin? Looks like now they are stopping at Breaux Bridge. but yes, there will be a bottleneck somewhere.

Until they widen the whole thing to a uniform number of lanes, there will always be a bottleneck somewhere. Complaining about the creation of a bottleneck is just silly.

You’re really gonna be pissed when Breaux Bridge breaks ground on a well-deserved 4-lane loop.

When I first saw the plan to three lane everything I assumed they were just adding an extra lane but it looks like they are actually tearing up the old road and putting in three new lanes. It was definitely needed. The interstate around Breaux Bridge was third world quality.

But is that because of the construction and subsequent wrecks?

Also, wasn’t it determined that this stretch of interstate needed to be redone and they just decided to make it 3 lanes while they are at it?

It absolutely needed to be redone. That stretch was in horrible shape. The complaints about it being done just make no sense to me.

Well, I do. People all complain about the roads, but want the roads they used to be fixed first. Anything else is necessary

The construction related backups are due more to rubbernecking or just two 18 wheelers blocking up both lanes than wrecks. The plan was always to widen it to three lanes. That stretch of road is deemed to be a high traffic trucking corridor and they got some federal money for it.

Biggest waste of road funds since the Bridge to Nowhere.

That section is never routinely busy or backed up and never would have been either.

So we should wait until traffic is stupid bad for 20 years before doing something?

The official reason is that the road had to be completely rebuilt anyway and since the long term plan is to three lane most of I-10, it is best to widen it while it is being rebuilt. The state is actually doing something smart and proactive and we still complain?
