Trader Joe's, the California-based grocery chain with a cult-like following, is planning to open a store on Tulane Avenue late next year, according to a source familiar with the development, another sign of the transformation of the once seedy boulevard into a burgeoning medical-based district.

The proposed development would transform a long-disused and overgrown lot — which covers almost the entire block between Tulane Avenue and Banks Street, with South Rocheblave and South Dorgenois streets making up its other borders — into a 13,000-square-foot grocery store, with more than 100 parking spaces.

It is located adjacent to the old Dixie Brewery, the facade of which is now part of the huge $1 billion Veterans Administration complex, which opened in 2016.

I’m happy about it, and I know they are trying to revitalize that area a good bit, but still a pretty off location for TJ’s to me.

They better have substantial security.

That is not a good area. The chick fil a they just opened on Carrollton and Tulane also still scares me and I would fear for my life if I worked there

That could help that area a lot. Whole Foods is not real far from there, but a close grocery store to the Med Complex and all the new apartments is big.

I haven’t heard of a single problem there. Pretty sure they have security there so I’m sure that helps

Its a LOT better than it was a decade ago. A lot.

But still pockets of real seediness. Sidney Torres has been buying up huge pockets of that area to try and change that.

Tulane has pretty much bought everything available in the area. They are copying the Willis Knighton (North) Model in Shreveport which is just buy everything near your facilities. Its cheaper to buy all that low priced crap than start a new campus.

And there is a cooperative for security so it will be safe.

Trader Joe's in BR is really pushing it with me. There is an employee that is dressed as a woman but has a full beard.

It wouldn’t be received with applause in the council meeting.

Shutting down the Ulloa playhouse has done wonders. The rest of those hood clubs need to be run off but they aren't shooting every night like at Ulloa

Thought their NOLA store was going to be at St Charles and Louisiana Avenue. I think Ida stopped that.

Seems like Mandeville and Lafayette would be much better markets for TJ’s

And a lot less theft

I anxiously await the follow-up post 2 years from now confirming the Trader Joe’s in Orleans Parish on Tulane Ave is permanently closing.
