That's a Land Cruiser with heavy and expensive modifications.

That's just not true anymore of the LC they sell in America. Nothing that big is going to be an overland vehicle without significant changes to the suspension, wheels, tires, axles, and bodywork.

I love the LC, but overlanding was clearly not a priority when designing the latest versions.

More off road miles are driven in Wranglers than almost anything out there. There's extensive aftermarket support, and it's far more appropriately sized than the Land Cruiser.

I don't think you understand what overlanding actually is.

I didn’t say in the States. There are cheaper, more utilitarian LC’s sold elsewhere.

Actually, I don’t think you do....there’s a big difference between Overlanding & Off-Roading/Rock crawling.
The LC’s storied history is right up there with Land Rover, but modern Rover’s aren’t reliable.

Ah okay. Yeah I was wondering why so many were mourning the loss of the current gen "Americanized" Land Cruiser. It's basically a Z71 Tahoe or Suburban. It's often driven by the same type of people too.

What I'd really like is the previous gen Defender (UK Market). They rusted like crazy, but they were simple enough that you could fix with fairly basic tools. Similar to a 70 series Toyota Land Cruiser. American safety regulations make those trucks impossible to buy over here.

It's history. Those trucks that built that reputation haven't been available in the US for a long, long time. Those aren't being lost in 2021, they were lost decades back.

ut then again Land Cruiser enthusiasts would balk at Range Rover reliability.

If you want reliability a six figure SUV is probably a poor choice.

That's what the Land Cruiser has become in the states.

We don't get the 70 series like they do in the Middle East.

Any LC is far better than that GM AT4 Yukon turd.

Those are highly modified Land Cruisers.

A Jeep, 4Runner, Colorado ZR2, or even a Tahoe Z71 with similar mods can do that.

Expensive cars are usually loaded with modern tech and luxurious refinements. Both of which are low on the reliability scale.

In addition SUVs are driven harder and have more sophisticated drive train / suspension. Which equate to more maintenance higher likelihood of breakage.

Now combine them.

Since I lived in Kenya for a while my definition would be driving on deeply rutted dirt roads that are covered with fist sized rocks, and large boulders, often forced to make a new trail around exceptionally bad sections, crossing dry river beds, with 40 degree banks going in and out, always in 4WD, never breaking 20mph, and doing this 15 hours a day for 4-5 days, all just to visit a friend, then you do the same thing to get back home. No cell service, rarely meet another vehicle, gives the term reliability a whole new meaning. I drove places that people with any money at all would only fly to. Not being able to afford a Land Crusier I did it in a Isuzu Trooper.
