The best part of being a tanker (other than the awesome tanker boots) is odds are, if you buy it, you’ll be dead before you know what happened.

I guess you can add this to horseshoes and hand grenades
Posted on 4/13/21 at 8:44 pm to Darth_Vader
Ok, but how does that happen? Seriously.

They are designed to explode above the target on purpose. Armored vehicles have thinner armor on the top surface compared to the sides

How does the middle know it’s over the tank? If there were two tanks, how would it now to blow over the 2nd one, if that was the intended target?

So is it a targeted charge that projects the blast downward? Fascinating weapon.

"for those of you wondering "why didn't the missile hit the tank directly?" the tow 2b relies on a warhead located near the center of the missile which explodes once it senses the metallic structure of a heavy armored vehicle. there is an explosively formed penetrator (EFP) that fires downward onto the weaker armored top. as you can see, the performance is stunningly effective, and similar results can be expected on current and possible future tanks and IFVs."

Tube fired, optically sighted, wire guided.

Do them Russian and Chinese baws have similar tech?

I was on a TOW vehicle for a while. Saw a couple live fires. Not too many as those things are expensive.
It was cool. They made a noise when fired and then silence. You could see the small rockets fire to keep the missile on target. Especially if the gunner had slightly adjusted his sights. It was guided via a wire that stayed attached to the missile and APC.
They always told us that if you fire you better hit your target. Because if you miss they will know where you are in an instant.

Thanks. Figured it was something like that. Another poster had the same question.
Instead of the proverbial “weak underbelly “ it also has a “weak on top of the turret “. Makes sense.

I was infantry on a M113. We had a tow company right nest to us. I never knew that the TOW was like a Dragon, also having a wire guided system.

I actually knew this but not in those exact words, I simply copy/pasted what one of those baws commented in the thread under the video ;)

Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time for that white bird flying by.

Damn, does that thing have a shape charge in it to direct the blast down like that?
Pretty cool.
Pretty cool.

One of my co workers was a vehicle commander of a TOW equipped Bradley in the first Gulf War. When they got there his crew had only ever fired two live missiles. When they rolled across the line, his Commander told them the gloves were off. He told me "everything got a TOW" for two days.

Those things were extremely effective in the gulf war along with our tanks, we obliterated nearly every T-72 tank in the dessert!
