I know but I have never seen one in the wild. It’s one of those things most people don’t carry in the recovery kit

Damn. I have done that more times than I can count. With no concern.

Why towel?

Because it falls. Heavy blanket or something like that on the rope/chain/strap whatever. Makes it fall to the ground.

ETA: or at the very least dampens it so it doesn't come through the windshield or back glass.

I was driving on the interstate one day and off a flatbed, I saw this tumbling object rolling end over end coming right at me bouncing 5-6 feet high going 65-70 mph. I had enough time to quickly swerve out of the way but I think about this ball hitch at least every month. If I hadn’t seen it, it would have been a cannonball to the face type scene in my truck. Scary as hell.

That’s terrible but common sense should have been applied. That drop hitch should have never been used to try and make a high load horizontal pull. It isn’t designed for that.

Had the same happen to a friend and me on I-70 in Denver. It was like watching in slow motion.

Gotta watch that line of fire. Always be aware of where something will go if it breaks

That’s why you use synthetic rope with a wet towel draped over the middle

This right here. Learned all about this when I lived in Colorado. The Warn winch on my Jeep came with something to put on the winch line.

That’s SOP for a winch cable, but no blanket or coat, etc hung on the strap is stopping that hitch. That just was not smart.

I got sunk in mud one time and had 3 or 4 one inch heavy braided 6’ tow straps that we feathered together. I was positive they were going to break but they pulled my tundra out of the mud with a good yank. Guess I won’t do that again.

Your humor fails. Your stupidity does prevail though. You have that in your favor.

It’s not the tow strap that broke. You are right it could have been you. The hitch could have broke on you also.

The best way to avoid unfortunate demises like this is don’t be a baw or red neck. This literally has zero chance of ever happening to me. And if it does feel free to laugh your arse off.

No doubt. But that conversation started when I was reply to someone saying chain. I saw a chain break that one time.

That looks like blood on the ball.

That's gonna be a closed casket.

I will add a stuck as that truck looks, I’d be calling a tractor. But I understand trying.
