Cinque Terre. It's beautiful, relaxing and just old school awesome.

Florence would give you the most out of your two days. I have been there twice and always left wanting more. If you only had one day, Pompeii would be best, but you can see most of it in an afternoon.
I've never been, but this area is on my bucket list.

I'd do Cinque Terre, it's on our list for our next European trip. Florence is awesome, too.
I think Pompeii would be solidly third of those three.

What do you enjoy about traveling most?
I generally enjoy:
-food, in particular local specialties
-walkable 'scenic' urban areas with shops, bars and restaurants, and possibly some interesting architecture.
-historical sites that have some standing structures. I don't care for things like old battlefields or places where impressive structures USED to be. I am seriously impressed with the really old structures though. The Colosseum is pretty high on my list of places to visit and we're using Rome as a home base. The Taj Mahal is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen.
-'quaint' shite like old fishing docks and historical districts.
-large works of art.
I spent two days in Paris looking at paintings in museums and I wish I'd spent the time elsewhere. The Mona Lisa in particular was a complete waste of time; you can see it better on a google image search. I don't know if that makes me uncultured or what but I just didn't care for it that much.
I know this doesn't exactly narrow it down at all. My main concern about Cinque Terre is that it's going to be full of tourists. Main draw for CT is that it could be quaint and authentic in a way that Rome and Florence won't be (I dont know which of these two statements is going to be more true about CT). Main concern about Pompeii is that it's going to be just rubble and not really inspire much thought. Main draw is that it could provide a real cool window into the daily life of Romans from 2000 yrs ago. (Again, don't know which is more true.) I know nothing about Florence.

Pompeii is amazing. Hike up Mt. Vesuvius, tour Pompeii, and eat at any one of the amazing restaurants in Naples. You have to get a pizza while there. Best pizza you will ever eat, I don't give a flying frick what New Yorkers or Chicagoans have to say.

You are absolutely wrong in this. Basically, imagine a 2000 year old city that is completely intact except the buildings are missing their roofs and window pains. That's pompeii. They even have essentially plaster casts of people, complete with their facial expressions, as they were buried by ash. It's a great experience, but only worth 1 day of your time.

Rome certaintly isn't "quaint". It's dirty, touristy, and seedy. Florence is everything you've ever dreamed about Italy being. It looks like a dream, yet it actually feels authentic. It's clean, yet fun and beautiful. Florence is everything you wish Rome was.

I was there in March and it was slammed. Would not want to be there high season. It is beautiful but you need to go in low season. I love Florence-great food, great wine, great art.

Florence!
I enjoyed all three. Pompeii as a daytrip from Naples was fine (did Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii in the same day). The Cinque Terre is awesome as there is a hiking trail that connects the five cities and it is gorgeous. Also, you can always relax by the beach in any of the cities. The food is good as well.
But Florence is the best city in Italy, imo.

Go to Florence for the first day then drive to Forte Di Marmi and rent a beach chair here. LINK

Thanks for all the responses guys. I'm going to push my compadres to spend less time in Rome now and more in Florence, and do a day trip to Pompeii. I'm on the fence about CT, may not have enough time.

Going from Florence to CT is going to take you a while that's why I suggested Forte Di Marmi.

You can't overstate the effect of this statue. Incredible. Plus Florence has some great restaurants, and art and spectacular architecture all over.

Rome: The Vatican is a must if you are Catholic or if you care about Renaissance art even a little. If you don't, just go to San Marco square and skip the long lines for the Vatican Museums.
The Pantheon and the surrounding area is awesome.
The Coliseum and nearby Roman Forum are must sees.
You can knock all of this out in a day. Spend the rest of your time living the Roman way. Wake up around 9:00ish and eat some fruit, cheese, and a little wine. Have a light lunch of maybe a little pizza or a sandwich with wine. Take a nap. Around 4:00, drink some more wine with a little antipasta (meat and/or fruit with cheese) and some wine. Then, go out to dinner around 10:00pm and eat a ton while getting plastered on wine and raging hard partying all night.

Florence is awesome if you like museums and art. Other than that, it sucked. Venice and Cinque Terre were some of favorite spots. I like the the small villages and country side too.

Big fan of Florence and would consider the following among the must see:
Accademia and Uffizi Museums
the Duomo
Piazza della Signoria (climb tower if you can)
The Basilica of San Miniato
Palazzo Vecchio/Ponte Vecchio
I doubt you can go wrong at any of the possible places you mention.

Cinque Terre is incredible....and two (full) days is a nice amount of time there. Any less and you're rushed, any more and well....I guess more is even better!
