Curious, but in a two-story home with no basement, am I correct that the best shelter we have would be the closet space underneath our stairs to the second floor?

If it is near the center of the home, then probably so. You want to put as many walls as possible between yourself and the outside.

Hoping everyone stays safe and that these tornados aren’t as dangerous as they seem to be. Watching the radar and waiting here in Monroe. Looks like we’re going to get hammered within the next hour

It’s close. There’s at least one wall outside of the four walls of the closet (none of the closet walls are exterior). Unfortunately, we don’t have anything more central that has walls and no windows. The downside is that it’s in the foyer area, about 10-12 feet from the front door which happens to be the side of the house where most storms approach from.

...A TORNADO WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 1115 AM CDT FOR
SOUTHEASTERN BIENVILLE PARISH...

At 1035 AM CDT, a confirmed tornado was located 17 miles southeast of
Ringgold, or 19 miles west of Jonesboro, moving northeast at 55 mph.

HAZARD...Damaging tornado.

SOURCE...Radar confirmed tornado.


IMPACT...Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without
shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage
to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is
likely.

Locations impacted include...
Saline, Lucky, Bienville, Friendship and Liberty Hill.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

To repeat, a tornado is on the ground. TAKE COVER NOW! Move to a
basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy
building. Avoid windows. If you are outdoors, in a mobile home, or in
a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect
yourself from flying debris.

This cluster of thunderstorms is capable of producing tornadoes and
widespread significant wind damage. Do not wait to see or hear the
tornado. For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest
floor of a building.
