ACT is extremely learnable
if you can't manage a 30 on that thing with all the study programs available then you are either not college material or lazy

What are you going for here? I am missing something.
My assumption is you're in favor of keeping TOPS requirements where they are so people like you who were low achievers in HS but have Phd's will benefit.

You know he may be right, maybe we should raise our standards on what "college material" is.
Then maybe, college degrees would matter again for employment purposes.
I hear you, but it hasn't been that way for a very very long time. But before we go changing college entrance standards we might need to overhaul primary and secondary education in this state.

And masters degree without a thesis isn't a masters. Just messing.
Not the first time I've heard this

For whatever reason the average black ACT tester only scores a 17.0 according to a quick Google search, far below whites and Asians.
Why is this? Are you suggesting that blacks are somehow inherently less intelligent than whites and Asians?
I'd wholeheartedly disagree. I'd argue that there is a disproportionally large subset of blacks in this state who simply come from a culture that as a whole doesn't care about learning or school, and that skews the scores lower.
It's the same subset that skews every negative statistic. It's simply an ignomious legacy of greed gone by.

I expect 28 will be a high hurdle for most baseball players. Maybe I'm wrong.

You guys are right. We have too many college graduates in our workforce. He need to add a barrier for people going to college: the cost.

Thanks for the assumption, but this entire thread I have said I have no issue with TOPS being fixed from the way it is.
I just know in doing so that kids like me would be left behind...if they just go off ACT scores, which probably won't be the case. I want them to be more fair in judging their higher standards. Like my 3.85 GPA for high school.
I don't turn my back on my people to look cool.
It looks like you do...because you aren't cool and you are trying to be with your assumptions and put downs.
BOOM.

A bad standardized test taker does not make a bad test taker or a bad student.

That's a little high IMO. Lotta good potential will be lost in kids not going to college bc they can't afford it.

I think there should be a sliding scale for ACT scores for TOPS, but gpa of 3.0 is required across the board.
25 - partial tuition
28 - full tuition
30+ - other perks
And regardless, you need a 3.0 to qualify at all for each level.
I say this because while a GPA isn't really comparable between schools, it still shows some sort of work ethic.

Are they being denied college admission now?

I would never suggest such a thing, I was just going off of a study I saw based on ACT scores released by the ACT company itself. It also said that only 1% of black test takers get over a 28 in the math and science portions, which can't be argued as something that isn't fair like English since their communities have their own slang. I mean if only 1% of black students will qualify in a state that is about 1/3 black there is no way this new requirement can stand. I hope we all agree upon that!

ETA:
What does the ACT top out at nowadays?
Was a 36, IIRC in the early '90s.

You will see an increase in the number of students suddenly requiring "accommodations" on the ACT now.

I know some graduate schools have a formula that takes into account GPA and GRE score (something like GPA x 200 + GRE= 1700), maybe they could use something similar to that?
