Gotta say it was hella sweet to have TOPS fund my degree at LSU before leaving Louisiana.

Make TOPS recipients stay in state for minimum of four years after graduation or they have to pay it back.
Or find ways to make this damn state more attractive to stay. The only positive thing this state can boast about is adding half a million people to Medicaid expansion.

Why does tops exist? I never understood that. My brother-in-law had tops and failed out of LSU after a year. He's not the most book smart person i know. Seems like it's a financial burden on the state.
To encourage people with potential to stay in the state with the promise of a free college education. Instead you have people majoring in English and gender studies, and the people who are majoring in STEM are taking those degrees to Texas, Colorado, Washington, etc. where the real money is.

need more business opportunities in Louisiana
That's where the higher taxes come into play. Businesses are gonna start flocking to this state any day now.

I know my parents paid a shite ton of taxes for the 18 years before I was a TOPS recipient for 4 years. May technically classify as just another unnecessary tax burden, but if our state is gonna piss money away on poor and lazy, at least something is making its way back to the people that work hard.

Do you really think the average LA student is majoring in gender studies? Read the article, one of the girls who moved found a job in Austin in marketing. The only jobs in Louisiana are STEM. You can have a bs degree in Texas and still find a decent job.

I realize work may be easier to find in other states, so if we want graduates to stay then maybe give some tax incentives for college grads to start business here in Louisiana.

people with potential
From and outsider it seems like many people are on it that don't either deserve it or meed it. Like my wife's brother, too much of a dumbass but still got it. Plenty of people that can afford college but still take it.

Exactly. If we would just end sanctuary cities and work on our car insurance the economy would be booming. We had our chance....

Yea their needs to be some overhauls to TOPS. I don’t know what the answer is but it’s not working as intended right now.
For starters it can go away.

STEM
There certainly aren't enough stem jobs in Louisiana. I came to LSU for a graduate degree and moved back to texas with a job here. There was nothing there, so it meant spending 2 years apart from my wife while she finished up her program. Luckily she got a job in Dallas too when she finished.

Thank you TOPS. I appreciate the money and now I live in sunny St Petersburg. Again thank you

TOPS is not the problem.
It's the crumbling economy and a complete misuse of tax dollars that's the problem. TOPS is a good investment as long as you have something to offer graduates when they are done with school.

I moved with 4 other college graduates from Louisiana to Austin in 2010. All had TOPs. Best decision I ever made. No jobs in LA
yep. i just made the move to austin earlier this year and i can't believe i lasted as long as I did in baton rouge. i still love BR but i make so much more out of state and have so many more opportunities to make more than i already do that it doesn't make sense to entertain coming back.

I work in technology and have been at several large technology businesses in Louisiana over the past 10 years. The businesses almost do nothing to give the inexperienced a way in to the workforce so they go to Texas. Louisiana businesses fricking Louisiana while Louisiana fricks itself.

Right, I’m saying of the few jobs in the state, most are STEM. You can find a job in one of the big Texas areas with just about any degree.

I was an example of this, but after a couple years I ended up getting a much better job in LA so I moved back

JBE will make it worse. Texas is laughing at us more and more.
