Some of those Spanish sounding names are Islenos.
Like my grandmother 's maiden name is Rodrique. Her family traces their roots back to the Canary Islands, and before that to Portugal. But her people were Cajun through and through, in language, customs, cooking, etc. They adopted the Cajun Culture over the years, as did a lot of Germans from the River Parishes.

In south Louisiana, or at least in Oakdale, Rodriquez is pronounced "Rode-riquez"

My folks in Lafayette don't crack the top 200. Its a very Cajun last name.

What about Gauthier? Originated in Avoyelles Parish but there seems to be a lot of them all over South Louisiana.
